Groovesome, psychedelic jazz fusion improvisations by London-based space ‘eads S.O.L.L.
Driven by the carefully tuned congas of Satin Singh & Oli Savill, underlined by rolling electric bass of Leon Britchard, and looped and licked up by Leon Stenning’s guitar and pedals, ‘Mind Reader’ stretches out to the horizon in six lissom, unfurling parts.
‘The Optimist’ introduces their sound with a glorious, yet finely tempered swirl of plangent effected guitar and conga polyrhythm, pointing the way forth where ‘Hip No Ties’ cuts loose on a pendulous, heads down groove that remains mercifully free of contemporary “psych” music’s more cloying aspects, and ‘Timeless’ follows with a certain sort of endless, but clipped Afro-Brazilian swag and spy-theme funk that also sloshes into the spooky dubbing of ‘Possibilities’.
In ‘Visionary’ they yoke back to a leaner, lilting minimalism with knowing brevity that defines each cut, and ‘Telepathy’ brings the percussion forward in an almost West African talking drums style against arcing, deliquescent backdrop of guitars ideal for evoking far-away landscapes on back of eyelids.
