Piping hot, deadly cool, documentation of the jazz trio in action at Mu, Kingsland Road, Dalston, switching between driving motorik rhythms and splayed breaks led by Idris Rahman’s expressive sax and FX and Robin Hopcraft’s trumpet.

For near 40 minutes the unit locks into a swingeing modal groove with captivating, disciplined looseness. The rhythm section of Leon Brichard, a french bass player who has worked with Salif Keita and Melt Yourself Down, synchs with US drummer, Gene Calderazo for the most, joined by Seb Roachford in the final part, to underpin Rahman’s blazing sax lines and Hopcraft’s trumpet.

The bass is a wandering beast stalking the lower register while the brass is wonderfully wide and open in the first part, simmering to more quizzical tussle in the 2nd part where Brichard joins in the upper registers with plucky fretwork moving up the neck to join its teetering conclusion. Rawly live, full of spunk and vigour, this is one for those who can hear jazz’s enduring virtues in the modern day. Do dive deeply into Ill Considered’s catalogue if that’s you.
