Audiopile Review: Number 12 in the ongoing Madlib Invasion Library series, which we had heard was to end here with this effort from DJ Muggs, but apparently there is a #13 on the horizon. Confusion aside, Madlib and Egon have saved one of the best in this amazing series for last. The storied producer has been on a nice run as of late, perhaps feeling reinvigorated by a new crop of MCs over the past half decade. He’s produced notable full lengths for Crimeapple, Jay Worthy, Mayhem Lauren, Flee Lord, and Tha God Fahim, pitched in tracks for the Griselda crew and scored the film Divinity alongside David Lynch protégée Dean Hurley. Silver Clouds has the feel of Muggs reverse engineering his own samples, a noir-like soundtrack of eerie synths, stark piano, faded horns and heavy-lidded drum breaks that could easily fit into the palette of samples used on any of his classic Cypress Hill or Soul Assassins albums. The album also fits the imaginary library mould quite well, playing out nicely as a full length soundtrack for a grimy black & white street-level thriller of the mind. 30 years into his awe-inspiring career, Muggs still stands as one of the best to ever do it.

Madlib Invazion Music Library Series was created by Madlib and Egon to give their creative friends a chance to stretch out and indulge in whatever type of music they wanted. This music was created for easy, one-stop clearance in film and television synchronization usage and for sampling. Multi-track files are available upon request for key projects. You can also enjoy these albums in the way that many do with the best of the best vintage library catalogs – listen, ponder, repeat.
