Audiopile Review: Been a dang minute since we’ve gotten any new material from Will Long’s ongoing Long Trax series, so we’re happy to have a new two-tracker, which is actually a primer for the upcoming Long Trax 4, due early next year. For anyone out there who has already followed his prolific Long Trax releases or his extensive “color” EPs, you likely know what you’re in for—lengthy meditations of minimal house peppered with samples of political and cultural figures, tailor made for deep listening sessions or early morning comedowns. Behind The Times continues a trend that began nearly a decade back with his releases on the legendary Comatonse imprint run by Terre Thaemlitz. With an even more prolific background in ambient music under his Celer guise, Long has merged the expansive warmth of that project with his distinct take on dance music, the two projects are far more complimentary to each other than you might expect. The title track, which takes up the whole of the A-Side, is a ten-minute workout driven by his typical steady-pulse beats, big, wavering ambient chords pushing it all towards euphoric bliss. On the flip, Long ’s “bassline mix” snaps it into an electro groove that reveals a darker undercurrent to the original, certainly not far from the now-classic DJ Sprinkles overdubs from Long’s earlier releases. A welcome return from one of our favourites!

“Will Long’s ‘Behind The Times’ delivers a refined minimal tech-house experience, blending smooth jazz elements with deep house vibes. The title track on Side-1 is a laid-back, melodic journey with a low tempo, incorporating subtle jazz influences into its minimalist structure. Its gentle, flowing rhythm creates a serene atmosphere, perfect for immersive listening. On Side-2, the ‘Bassline Mix’ elevates the track by introducing a powerful bassline, giving the smooth composition a darker, more groove-oriented feel while maintaining its minimal aesthetic. Long’s ability to balance intricate jazz influences with house and techno elements shines throughout this release, making ‘Behind The Times’ an understated but captivating entry in the minimal/tech house genre.” -Juno
