Audiopile Review: When the rave revolution really started to kick off, loads of people who’d just been hanging around the UK music scene got sucked into its orbit. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that people who’d been lost in the musical wilderness finally found their home. Released in 1994, ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman’ was Underworld’s third album, but it still feels like a blockbusting debut. Already industry veterans, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde were joined by young DJ Darren Emerson and took a quantum leap into an ecstatic new sound. Combining pumping techno beats, minimalist phase patterns, and Hyde’s delirious speak-singing (like a ‘loved-up’ Mark E. Smith) ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman’ is possibly the finest example of what, at the time, was briefly called ‘intelligent techno’. Underworld may be best known for the single ‘Born Slippy’, but ‘Dubnobass…’ is the group’s glorious crowning achievement.
