Night. My apartment is silent. From time to time, sounds come floating from other places in the building. The sound of the elevator, people’s movements, voices. Why is that only at these moments that such sounds are audible? For only these small moments, I feel connected with the outside world.

Being around others brings inspiration but is also mentally tiring. At such times it’s necessary to retreat. Retreating into solitude, we can rebuild the self.

But such isolation also has its painful points. The sharp pain of loneliness, the dull pain of ennui. The daily routine brings stability. But it also breeds monotony. In the midst of this monotony, the self can also become lost.

It’s at times like these that the sounds coming up through the walls catch my attention.
