The Hunter is one of Ike & Tina’s most blues-oriented albums. It was cut during the blues revival period of the late 1960s. Released just a few years after the epochal Phil Spector-produced River Deep Mountain High, The Hunter boasts several fine blues workouts in the inimitably electrifying Ike and Tina mode. The Stax sound figures prominently here, with producer Bob Krasnow (Captain Beefheart) keeping things nice and uncluttered to better frame Tina’s intense vocal workouts. Tina was at the height of her power here, the band was tight, and the material was excellent. The album prominently features electric blues guitarist Albert Collins, who was originally uncredited for legal reasons. This masterpiece earned Tina Turner her first solo Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female at the 12th Annual Grammy Awards.
