Audiopile Review: New full length of Immersive luxury-jazz by the unsinkable Greg Foat, who, just over halfway through the year, is somehow on his fourth full length. Foat’s ensemble here is larger than we’re used to hearing from the uber-collaborator, as he’s tended towards duos and trios for the majority of his output. Assembling a cast of regulars, Foat is joined by Binker Golding (Binker And Moses), Ill Considered’s Trevor Walker and the legendary Art Themen (both on sax), Kokoroko drummer Ayo Salawu, Makaya McCraven bassist Daniel Casimir, and his longtime trumpeter Trevor Walker, not to mention an additional trio of percussionists. Despite the numerous personnel, The Glass Frog never feels crowded or busy, Foat aiming strictly for a levitational experience with this low-key voyage. The scene-setting opener, “Sea Of Tranquility”, lives up to its name, Foat’s warm synths in full cruise control while luscious sax and trumpet laments sweep in like cool ocean air, the featherlight drumming keeps it all afloat. “Foals of Epona” retains some of that Balearic magic Foat cultivated on his pair of live albums from earlier this year, the tropical percussion and weightless bass help buoy the horn section’s intertwining solo. Outside of the synth-led daydream fusion of “Clusters”, Foat takes a back seat on much of the album, merely providing the chill ambience so the capable horn players can set sail. Not sure if there are more Foat albums to come this year, but this is easily the best of what is already shaping out to be one of his finest years.
Large group session featuring deep spiritual modal jazz and new age ambient synthesizer pads
