Audiopile Review: (Spoiler alert: WAREHOUSE FIND!) Techno Animal was like a potted history of the original UK post-rock scene. Justin Broadrick started off playing in distinctly rocking rock bands, most famously Godflesh. Then he joined Kevin ‘The Bug’ Martin in projects like God and Ice, which mixed rock noise with electronic enhancements. Techno Animal saw the duo going fully electronic, coming to the same logical conclusion as numerous other UK post-rockers. The heavyweight beats of later-period Techno Animal are particularly notable as a clear prelude to The Bug’s world-conquering productions. There is no better example of said heavyweight beats than ‘Demonoid’, lead single from the duo’s 1998 ‘Techno Animal vs Reality’ album. To promote the album, ‘Demonoid’ was issued as part of a killer four-track 12” on the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal label. Dub techno pioneers Porter Ricks and rave-punk miscreant Alec Empire leant production assistance on the title track and ‘Atomic Buddah’, respectively (although these were the mega-banging originals, rather than the more abstract remixes included on the album). This 12” has long been out of print, of course. But guess what someone found in a warehouse? Yep, sealed original copies of that Grand Royal 12”. And we managed to score some for You Lucky People. Do not sleep. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.
