Audiopile Review: Three releases in, and the Pin catalogue has been a love letter to both minimal and dub techno. Segmenting the cavernous and hypnotic qualities associated with the latter while formulating compositions akin to the former, SnPLO craft meticulous, hypnotic sequences but maintain a dubbed-out rigidity. The A-side is a testament to this premise; an off-kilter, spacious beat accompanied by a plucky drum pattern paired with whooshing, fragmented manipulations that splits the difference between the interconnected genres. The B-side has a paranormal resonance, transporting the listener to a smoked-out after-hours, featuring a driving lead suffused with what sounds to be the crackle from an off-centre run-out groove. Seemingly unknown producer, Roadkill, gets the commission on the C-side, whose NTS appearance on PLO’s drizle.fm is an early contender for mix of the year. Traversing further down the minimal rabbit hole, a creeping stab pans in and out across the track that’s a straight line back to Robert Hood’s classic “Realm” track. The D-side is the standout, a pulsating loop that reels you back in before falling off the edge, while a subtle bass line enters around the one-minute mark, which pump fakes two times before fading into obscurity. In the swell of the mood, SnPLO’s level of detail can be overlooked, a skill that shines through particularly clear here. These subtle nuances reveal the care and deep understanding SnPLO have for techno. And that love is widely evident, SnPLO masterfully unraveling the work of those before them, adopting familiar sounds while maintaining that skewed Pin disposition. Shades of Baby Ford’s illustrious Ifach catalogue, Jasper’s entries on Cytrax or the revered Kikoman’s output on Deepfried are scattered throughout, clearly drawing inspiration from the 12”s in their record bags. This double 10″ pack is limited to 375 copies. Ordered straight from the source. Shouts to the fellas over at Acting Press and Doo.
