Audiopile Review: Seefeel is a band that’s been legendary across multiple genres. Emerging from the MBV-inspired dreampop scene, Seefeel became a defining act of the OG UK post-rock movement. Early releases on Too Pure melded deliriously looping guitars, incoherently cooing vocals, and electronically enhanced percussion. Debut LP ‘Quique’ encompassed everything that was great about British experimental rock in 1993 while sounding utterly timeless. Within two years, Seefeel had moved to Warp and refined their sound into an elegantly austere take on ‘electronic listening music’. There was even a release on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label. The group’s initial incarnation petered out not long after that. But the core duo of Sarah Peacock and Mark Clifford have rebooted Seefeel for the 21st century (which is where it always seemed to belong). Their self-titled comeback LP from 2010 sounded shockingly contemporary, with Fennesz-style processed guitar over hypnotically slomo dub rhythms. Seefeel has covered a lot of ground throughout its sporadic existence. This new six-tracker, ‘Everything Squared’, feels like a survey of that terrain. Basically, if you like ‘Quique’ and ‘Succour’, you’ll flip for this. Looped guitars, dub rhythms, and sparse IDM atmospheres are all present. But it is Peacock’s eerily processed voice that ties everything together. Might be tempting to see this as a prelude to the new full-length Warp has been teasing for 2025. But ‘Everything Squared’ stands alone as one of Seefeel’s most complete and flat-out best releases. Its compactness is what allows Peacock and Clifford to sustain a rich, nocturnal mood for the duration. The result is entirely, gorgeously satiating. The sheer beauty of ‘Everything Squared’ makes it more than just an encapsulation of Seefeel’s various adventures. Despite having legend status among multiple constituencies, Peacock and Clifford have honestly never received the fevered adulation they deserve. With ever-increasing interest in classic 90s shoegaze, post-rock, and IDM, their time has surely come. They’ve certainly risen to the occasion with this perfectly formed release.

After critically acclaimed reissues of their mid-90s material, Seefeel return with their first new music since 2011.

Everything Squared is a one-off 6-track mini-album which presents a contemporary evolution of their trademark sound. Mainly composed and performed by the core duo of Mark Clifford and Sarah Peacock, with bass on two tracks from Shigeru Ishihara.

Mastered by Berlin-based engineer Stefan Betke aka Pole at Scape Mastering, and housed in a sleeve designed by Ian Anderson at The Designers Republic.
