Audiopile Review: Eternal shop fave RAMZi follows up her 2023 Feu Follets release with a new full length, once again issued on her own imprint, FATi. It’s taken most of a decade, but the rest of the world has finally caught up to her primal blend of house-via-fourth world dance-offs, her name now a shorthand reference in the recent surge of globally-minded and transportive dance music. Moon Tan further fleshes out this distinct hybrid that’s been honed across her 14 releases that have been issued not only on FATi but also taste-making imprints like RVNG, Music From Memory, 12th Isle and Mood Hut. Reaching back to her roots right here in Vancouver, RAMZi pulls in Mood Hut associate Linda Fox (aka Dave Biddle) for the addition of sax on a handful of tracks, who blows in a warm jazzy breeze to propel her humid playfulness. Further exploring acoustic instrumentation, RAMZI also fuses the nylon-stringed acoustic guitar of Loic Reeves-Blizzard to her fizzing alien landscapes for several tracks, opening an effervescent gateway between early pioneers of fourth world like Suso Sáiz or Gigi Masin and the squishy grooves of Salamanda. A dozen plus releases deep and RAMZi still sounds so incredibly fresh. Huge recommendation.
The nom de plume of Montréal-based DJ and producer Phoebe Guillemot, RAMZi releases her 14th album of cutting-edge sounds. She produces an exciting and enticing blend once again on moon tan, on her own FATi imprint, this time bringing aboard a compact group of musicians on saxophone, guitar and keyboards.
