Audiopile Review: The Silent Season catalog is a dense one. Though the label has been dormant for a few years now—label head Jamie McCue currently focusing on his dub-forward 7 inch-only imprint Moon Garden—this week and next will see first-time vinyl pressings of a pair of releases, dusting off some lusted after gems from the label’s illustrious past. Much of the label’s output has been issued on CD, albeit packaged with great attention to detail and graced with awe-inspiring photographs of unvarnished nature scenes, many of which were taken by McCue himself. While we’ve been mostly focused on vinyl over the years, it’s meant that we’re just now discovering some of these long OOP releases. Stillpoint, Purl’s 2015 album, was one of these now sought after CDs that passed us by, initially released in an edition of 350 and now going for exorbitant amounts online. The Swedish producer, who now has somewhere in the range of 100 credits to their name, might be best viewed as the Scandinavian counterpart to another Silent Season alumni, Vancouver’s own Segue. Exemplary of Silent Season’s twin obsessions of ambient and dub techno, both producers have pinpointed that perfect balance between the two, dovetailing them perfectly in their restless pursuit of sublimity. Through a series of lengthy tracks, Purl releases his gaseous ambient tones like a slowly ascending morning fog, patiently building upon the plumes with deeply submerged bass rolls, dubby tics and astral synth sequences. It’s essential for all Silent Season fans who may have let these early releases from the label slip them by, but will also be a must for those already invested in the output of artists like Deepchord, Yagya and cv313. Edition of 200, ordered direct from the artist in Sweden via his LILA लीला imprint. We have a handful available, and they are pricey, but you’re only gonna get one shot at these through us.

Stillpoint
At the center of us is a focal point of consciousness
Perfectly still, yet vibrant with life
This is our natural state
Ever at peace, yet ever expanding
Ever at peace
In knowing that being can never cease to be
Thus there is no death
Only eternal life
Ever expanding
In knowing that eternity is never done
We are in continuous motion towards what lies beyond
Across endless new horizons
