Audiopile Review: Quite chuffed to finally see an attainable pressing of Pink Siifu’s 2019 collab with Yungmorpheus arrive in the shop, an album that was initially issued as one of those expensive Bandcamp-only-releases-that-sells-out-in-5-minutes releases that have been plaguing underground hip-hop releases the past few years. Sour grapes aside, we’re just happy to finally have a key piece of both the Siifu and Yungmorpheus catalog on our shelves, an album that marked the start of an incredible run for both artists that continues to this day. Indeed, Bag Talk dropped at the start of both their wildly fruitful solo careers—Siifu quickly going on to issue instant classics like Ensley, Negro, Gumbo! And FlySiifu’s, while Yungmorpheus would go on an unstoppable tear, releasing a dozen+ albums for top shelf labels like de Rap Winkel, Lex, Tuff Kong and RRC. Much of what has made both Siifu and Yungmorpheous’ trajectories so endlessly satisfying can be traced right back to Bag Talk, their faded rhymes delivered with half-shut eyes and a mutual penchant for smoked out production style is on full display here. And the latter is really where the album truly stands out. The beats are an immaculate collection of the post-Madlib, lo-fi style, the producers sourcing tight, earworm-y loops and bathing the tracks in a crackled, hazy atmosphere that dovetails perfectly with Siifu and Yungmorpheus’ blunted angle. Loaded with now sought after producers like Ohbliv, Ahwlee, Fitz Ambro$e, as well as both Yungmorpheus and Siifu (under his iiye producer guise), Bag Talk is the perfect primer for both of these prolific artists and an essential piece of contemporary hip-hop that’s been out of reach for us until now. Don’t sleep.
