Probably best known for two cuts starring belting vocals by OG deep house singer Robert Owens in house and D&B modes, ’Solaris’ marked the end of a golden era for Photek productions and his shift into more “grown-up” styles that side-eyed the full frontal attack of neuro D&B and its prevailing mutations. Alongside the strident deep house of ‘Glamourama’ and the album’s title tune, its Robert Owens cuts – the almost Main Street adjacent ‘Mine To Give’ purler, and Calibre-type liquid motion of ‘Can’t Come Down’ – remain timeless gems amid a fairly passable set that opens with the bashy acid big beats of ‘Terminus’ and takes in the cinematic sweep of ‘Halogen’ and trip hop of ‘Lost Blue Heaven’, with a classy beat-less kiss-off ‘Under the Palms’ that heralded his new role as a film scorer.
