Audiopile Review: New LP of dankest digi-dub and frazzled electro from Noda & Wolfers, the cross-continental collab between Taka Noda (best known as the Silent Season-backed ambient-dub warrior Mystica Tribe) and the prolific Dutch synth wizard Danny Wolfers (aka Legowelt). Their first release, 2022’s Tascam Space Season, took us by surprise with its gritty, refreshing dub aesthetic, and now the duo, after realizing they clearly had some chemistry together, sharpen their original mission statement. Noda provides much of the melody here, chasing the ghost of Augustus Pablo with sticky sweet melodica lines, the foil to Wolfers as he gets silly on the synths, running colourful lines and playful electro riddems, riddling everything in a cheeky abundance of echo and reverb. We’ve certainly been enamoured with much of the dub renaissance of late, rinsing the hell out of recent LPs from Ghost Dubs, Jay Glass and Froid Dub, but while those records tend towards the roiling, industrial-strength end of the sound, Noda & Wolfers sound like they’re having fun in the studio. That mischievous side has been missing in dub as of late, but Noda & Wolfers conjure the manic presence of Lee Perry in all his knob-twisting glory like no one else right now.
The second album from Noda & Wolfers on NIghtwind Records is here!!! With EVIL FADES IN ECHO the Japanese dub melodica virtuoso Takafumi Noda aka Mystica Tribe meets up with Danny Wolfers Legowelt again for an unique concoction of digital dub acid hall with raw lo-fi synth wave.
Buckets of echo, crumbled tapes, Mind altering phasers, luring spring reverbs, sloppy hythm boxes, HEAVY INTENSE BASS and the ever mystifying melodica playing from Noda bring this project to a new level.
