Audiopile Review: Aside from Skee Mask, German artist MPU101 might just be our favourite artist from the extensive Ilian Tape fold. With a single full length release each year since appearing on the imprint back in 2021, MPU101 still remains a bit of a mystery to us. Each release has arrived in a simple black inner sleeve (no jacket!) and scant info, we’re left with not much but our own ears to go on, a rare but welcome occurrence these days. And our ears tell us that MPU101 does some of the best post-BoC ambient work out there. Stripping the melancholic sound of Boards of Canada down to its warm analog core, MPU101 works largely with the wavering and dripping tones that have become synonymous with the IDM giants. Much of MPU104 feels off the cuff, as if they’re merely a conduit for these dreamtime melodies to ooze from the machine. Another gem from MPU101.
German producer Michal Matlak returns to his MPU101 moniker for a new LP of atmospheric electronica on Ilian Tape entitled MPU104. Recalling the bucolic serenity of classic 90s chill out tunes, MPU101 adds a slight wrinkle in pointedly pulling from the rougher shod woodiness from trailer parks and campsites over forests and brooks, thereby giving his work here a grittier feel when seen through that lens. A bit of horror movie dread creeps into the ambience of tracks like ‘TrailerparkBeauty’ and ‘DUES700’ to disrupt the placid beauty, if you’re looking for it.
