Audiopile Review: Say what you like about the reissue industrial complex, but it does a great job of shining a light on the lesser-known work of classic artists. Juan Atkins aka Model 500 is legendary as one of techno’s original architects. Perhaps inevitably, the 12” singles Atkins released in the 80s have become something of an albatross around his neck. But he never let that stop him working and innovating. Detroit’s techno innovators were always renowned for their progressive mindset and love of spacey sounds. And Atkins was the most avid space cadet of the bunch. For proof, check his 1995 album ‘Deep Space’, now available again thanks to those fine folks in the reissue industrial complex (or, more accurately, Atkins’ own Metroplex label). Like a lot of ‘later’ Model 500 releases, this is a head-trip that doesn’t sacrifice body-moving danceability. It’s the sound of Atkins using the techno blueprint he drew up in the 80s to realise the musical ambitions he harboured all along. Obviously, it’s insane to apply the word ‘later’ to an album that came out 30 years ago and only 10 years after the first Model 500 12”. Indeed, this is the project’s debut album and, as such, it represents an epochal moment in techno history. More than anything, it’s an extremely satisfying listen for anyone who likes their techno expansive and banging in equal measure. This is the squelchy, hypnotic sound of techno at its absolute best from an unimpeachable master of his craft.
