Audiopile Review: Coming not long after introducing the world to Nourished By Time, as well as hipping us to ML Buch & Astrid Sonne collaborator Vanessa Bedoret, London’s Scenic Route combine a pair of digital-only EPs from Mark William Lewis for this single LP, notably raising the profile of one of their city’s best kept secrets. With obvious nods to the sombre end of Dean Blunt (think Black Metal 2), Lewis’ two EPs strip out that prankster facade, exposing the heartfelt core and a bundle of raw nerves, simultaneously maintaining a fragile intimacy while still radiating an air of mystery. Fronted by his sung-spoken baritone, Lewis deploys elliptical bass lines and pitter patter percussion, leaving a wide open vista for his searching guitar lines, which strike on a tone that splits the difference between the melodic flashiness of Mark Knopfler and the vaporous wander of Steve Hiett. It’s a potent set Lewis that defies any easy categorization, sharing elements of indie rock, dream-pop, and driven by a low-lit singer-songwriter sensibility. We sense bigger things coming. Scenic Route has scooped another emerging talent, furthering their hot streak and elevating their status as a label to that we ought to keep sharp focus on. And, as with most things issued on label, this is a very small pressing. Edition of 100. Don’t blink.
