L4B started life as an impromptu project for Lolina’s NTS radio residency in 2020, two years later the duo have cobbled together a short full-length, finding the fuzzy mid-point between both of their particular styles. If you’ve been following Lolina’s recent releases, like September’s bonkers “Face the Music” and its predecessor “Fast Fashion” (which is repeatedly referenced on this one), then you’ll have a good idea of how far into the void her music’s been going recently. North Carolina-based producer Juhans for his part brings a grounded coherence to the project that’s in keeping with the dreamworld golden age hip-hop inspired collages that he’s been refining since his run of Tri Angle releases beginning in 2015.

The duo are both magnetically attracted to playful sonics and unstable rhythms, a thing that’s immediately harnessed on ‘Current View’, as it steamrolls through wobbly techno, picking up deranged voices, foley turntablism and airplane engine hum on the way. Almost anything is fair game for a flip, and while it might be difficult to listen to, the track is dizzyingly inventive, almost lurching into hip-hop in the creepy final third. ‘Me4nwhile in the L4’ is more straightforward, just about, stuttering into DJ Spooky-esque surrealism that maintains a neck-snapping beat without losing the Lynchian atmosphere.
