Audiopile Review: What’s up with the cover of Bon Iver’s new album? Shit looks like Jan Jelinek’s 2001 glitch-dub classic ‘Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records’ (or possibly something on the Peak Oil label). Not sure how this electronical design scheme benefits the indie-folk icon, but it sure was appropriate for the woozy minimalism of Jelinek’s masterful debut. So beloved is ‘Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records’ that JJ has become permanently associated with its stripped-back sound. But much of his work is considerably lusher. Take 2005’s newly reissued ‘Kosmischer Pitch’, for example. The mossy forest depicted on the cover is a perfect representation of the deeply organic music that lies within. The album title’s apparent reference to krautrock aptly evokes its rich, punchy sound-world and hypnotic grooves. Fans of Jan Jelinek’s more skeletal recordings might be surprised, but ‘Kosmischer Pitch’ is one of his most immediately compelling and rewindable albums.

A long-lost vinyl album is back in stock: for the last 20 years, Kosmischer Pitch by Jan Jelinek, originally released in 2005 on ~scape, existed only as a digital download. Right on time for the 20th anniversary, the remastered album is available again on vinyl.
