Superchunk has always been a band that went their own path and followed their own instincts. Back when they originally released Here’s to Shutting Up in 2001, they had already proven so much as a band. While it’s hard to believe that was twenty years ago, though now on its twentieth anniversary the band is reissuing the album. Accompanying the physical release will be a compact disc with all of the demos for each song. Below, the band’s song “Art Class (Song for Yayoi Kusama)” and video proves that it still holds up all of these years later.
That energetic sound that made the band so popular envelops the song. The mix of Laura’s bass, Jim’s guitar and Jon’s drums intertwine with Mac’s vocals perfectly. The song just pops and reminds you of how the band approached music back then. Mac’s vocals at times hit a falsetto and really add to the sound of the song. The video features the band performing while recording in a sense and it matches the drive of the song so well.
