The late Mac Miller’s fan-favorite mixtape Faces is finally arriving on vinyl.
Speaking on the all-new music video for “Colors and Shapes,” director Mason explained in a statement, “The track felt very visual to me, like it had its own world [in] this atmospheric nighttime place that was sometimes dangerous, sometimes comforting, then I saw a picture of Ralph and a story emerged.”
He further detailed, “To build it out, I asked Malcolm’s family to send me bits and pieces from his childhood, scenes from the town where he grew up, objects, toys from his room, little pieces of his life that I extrapolated outwards and used to inspire the story.”
“In the abstract, it’s meant to be a video about childhood, growing up as an artist and the highs and lows of that experience,” Mason explained. “It’s sort of a look at the emotional and difficult and perilous but noble path of an artist.”
Pittsburgh native Miller, né Malcolm James McCormick, died of an accidental drug overdose on Sept. 7, 2018; he was 26 years old. After the 2010 release of his debut single “Knock Knock,” Miller dropped 21 Billboard Hot 100 tracks, including collaborative No. 9 hit “The Way,” which he appeared on alongside his now ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande.
In 2018, the late artist was nominated for the Grammy for best rap album for his work Swimming. The project peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, where it charted for an incredible 157 weeks.
