“Interpolating the ‘Twin Peaks’ theme on the title track, Silva knows exactly what she’s doing with her latest solo project. Her understanding of the politics of Americana – and the country industry in general – is baked into her art, and you shouldn’t overlook the fact that ‘Tinker Bell’s Cough’ is a more a multimedia project from an award-winning conceptual artist than it is an album. The Lynch reference is smooth, and if you peep her NTS show, it opens with a track from Robert Altman’s ‘Nashville’, a film that directly addressed country music’s symbiotic relationship with republican politics. So when Silva baby voices junkyard sweet nothings on ‘American Shield’ over slide guitars and dramatic strings, or sings of barnyard life (complete with animal sounds) and the importance of “private property” on ‘Buck Blood’, you need to take it with a pinch of salt.

A look at Silva’s lovingly clunky ‘Tinker Bell’s Cough’ homepage shines more light on the project. “Passions of a country girl in the valley of humiliation,” a badge reads, while the webshop sells gaudy merch and Silva’s interrelated sculptures. Her steel and rubber slippers will set you back 3,500 bucks, while a pink resin stein is a healthy $1,500. The most important revelation, though, is that there’s a video for almost every track, and this is where we get to visualize Silva’s concept in more detail. A tongue-in-cheek, hypersexualized Americana for the MAGA 2.0 era, it’s not always particularly pleasant listening (‘Beth’s Deth’ is basically Weezer covering ‘Teenage Dirtbag’), but it’s what we deserve. “Even my guardian angel said fuck it,” she drawls on the road trip anthem ‘The Punisher’, skewering ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’.
