Audiopile Review: Another double header in from the recently minted False Aralia imprint, the two newest EPs coming in alongside needed represses of the first two, both of which we initially sold out of before we had a chance to even list them. Like the first two releases, False Aralia is entirely centred around the work of one person, Oakland’s Izaak Schlossman, probably best known as one half of disco-pop outfit Loveshadow (Music From Memory/Dark Entries), the label establishing a distance from his primary group’s ambitions. With it’s direct connection to Peak Oil’s co-founder Brian Foote, who runs the label, these EPs and their ongoing pseudonym changes have given Schlossman a blank slate to deal in the abstracted/glitch/ambient/dub offerings of its parent label, a palette established by now coveted acts like Topdown Dialect and Purelink. While the first two EPs had a forward momentum to their greyscale tones and glitched palette, 03 is notable for its patient presence. Sashaying into a dubby sensuous glitch that rises and dips around Loveshadow vocalist Anya Prisk on the EP’s opener, moving on to Sam Gendel-esque fractal ambi-jazz led by the EWI-playing of Sean Conrad, while the flip side are a back-to-back slow roil of minimal grooves more akin to the previous two EPs in the series.

the object appears at close range, triggering neuro-pop circuits that activate deep within a network of dubwise rhythmic traces. their glow begins to pool between the gaps in the wires as we zoom, in four jumps, from a the span of a familiar room to the diameter of a paranoid microscopic twitch. Externalism all the way down. two longtime collaborators re-render: loveshadow’s anya prisk again lends her voice, wrapping a heavy halfstepping throb in her signature panorama of sheer and lace. sean conrad, west coast stargazer and steward of the inner islands label, paints wistful figures with his ewi. moving closer, the arrangements reappear as hollowed-out echoes, shedding their semantic forms as their edges leave view. closer still, the surface becomes a total matrix of vision comprised of countless flickering bits.
