Two slices of souled pop perfection from the still quite unfathomable Dawuna; one side a blazed summer heater in full D’angelo mode, the flipside a simmering downstroke primed for the broken hearted = perfect music from one of the best to ever do it.

An old soul in a yung vessel, Brooklynite Ian Mugerwa aka Dawuna leans in on the romance and heartache for a 7” debut via the Sun Royalle label, following from a covetable vinyl edition of ‘Naya’ last year.

The A-side’s ‘Love Jaunt’ is, in their own words, “a simple love song I wrote with my synth when I met my current shortie”, which is to discount its finely tailored weave of hooks and intricate vocal arrangements in the grip of a lip biting, downbeat shuffle.

‘Feel in Real Time’ on the flip swings it low and lovestruck, dialling down the pressure on an acoustic ballad that riffs on feelings of regret and things like that, puckered with all those blooz idiosyncrasies that have made Dawuna’s run thus far so fully compelling.

Basically, if you’re in on anything from Prince and Jai Paul to Niecy Blues or Tirzah, it’s as good as it gets.
