Audiopile Review: Debut vinyl release for Daniel Aged, the in-demand studio musician who has amassed some crazy credits over the past few years, contributing to albums for the likes of Kelela, Frank Ocean, Yves Tumor, and FKA Twigs. He also came up alongside Sam Gendel in the LA improv/jazz/electronic scene, and that’s where the sound of Bass Improvisations Vol. 1 can be easily traced. Indeed, this ain’t no pop or R&B-crossover banger. As the album title gives away, bass is the primary instrument, and Aged’s improvised and heavily layered playing is a conversational one, though you’ve got to listen closely to hear the subtle murmurings. Filling in the gaps are gently picked acoustic guitar and feather-soft ambient synths, pushing this into a world stranded somewhere between 80’s ECM, Steve Hiett’s quietude or the Gendel/Wilkes collabs slowed to a crawl. Deeply immersive stuff. Limited edition pressing from the fine folks at In Sheep’s Clothing.
