Audiopile Review: A welcome repress of a Brannten Schnüre rarity, a six-track seven-inch initially released back in 2020 via I Dischi Del Barone, the seven-inch exclusive sub-label of Discreet. Both the direct and spiritual connection to the Discreet/Gothenburg outlet is one that’s well established, the German duo stirring up an alchemical nostalgia for a mythologized Germanic past that’s in line with Blod’s Swedish folk revisionism. Even with a short run time of fourteen minutes, Brannten Schnüre still offer a bite-sized representation of what they’ve done so well across their slowly accruing body of full lengths. From the hushed, dramatic folk that opens up the proceedings, sung by vocalist Katie Rich with an almost-child like reverence, to the see-sawing industrial loops and the beatific collages rife with sampled junk shop ephemera and field recordings, Brannten Schnüre recall the groggy, lysergic midnight baroque of latter day Coil, albeit imprinting their own rustic feel to the portal-opening legends. Edition of 600, ordered direct from the label in Germany, Christian Schoppik’s Quirlschlängle.
***
6-track EP from the German experimental dark folk duo Brannten Schnüre. A shimmering, pastoral collage of acoustic instrumentation, electronics, field recordings and haunting, austere vocals, the songs on ‘Ei, Wir Tun Dir Nicths Zuleide!’ comes together to something quite astonishing and otherwordly. Luboš Fišer’s soundtrack to Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders comes to mind, as does the essence of Astrid Lindgren’s summer scenes with fragments of the ambience of something akin to Nico’s Desertshore.
