Charlie Parker blew into the world of jazz from Kansas City, and rose to fame in New York – but right from the start, he also left an impact on the scene in Los Angeles – where he recorded his famous Dial Records material, and also worked in some Jam Session recordings too! But the cuts here aren’t those at all – and instead represent some recently-unearthed LA recordings by Bird that appear here for the first time ever – the kind of fantastic live material and private recordings that often seem to have Charlie Parker reaching heights he didn’t always hit in the studio – perhaps because of the inspiring scenes in which the work was recorded! The package begins with some live material recorded with Dizzy Gillespie at Billy Berg’s Supper Club in 1945 – then includes some NBC material from the same time, an unusual Finale Club date from 1946 with Miles Davis on trumpet and Joe Albany on piano, and a 1948 JATP set recorded with a quartet at the Shrine. There’s also the full recordings of a legendary house party in 1952, at Zorthian’s Ranch, one track of which features Chet Baker – and an unknown location recording from 1952, and one more AFRS session from 1946. The material is a wonderful illumination of the way that Parker could blow into a scene and really set it on fire – and the well-done package features detailed notes that further illuminate the whole thing!
