‘Green City’ is a 15-minute Afro-disco track that pays homage to the legendary Fela Kuti while infusing a contemporary and infectious groove.
Five years in the making, the track was first introduced during Auntie Flo’s headline performance at the inaugural We Out Here festival in 2019 and has since evolved into a staple of his live sets.
Based on a field recording captured in Nairobi, Kenya, the song reflects d’Souza’s deep connection to his heritage, as Nairobi is his mother’s hometown.
The track stands out with its euphoric snare rolls, uplifting Malian-inspired guitar riffs, and a powerful vocal lead breakdown, culminating in an emotive and blissful ending.
Despite its 15-minute runtime, the track’s infectious energy and captivating groove ensure listeners will be left wanting more.
Featuring an extraordinary ensemble of musicians, including East African Ambassa Mandela from the band Sarabi on vocals, a collaboration that dates back to the sold-out Highlife World Series in 2015.
The track also includes contributions from Yohan Kebede of Kokoroko on keys, Ziggy Funk on guitar, Laurie Pitt from Golden Teacher on drums, and Glasgow’s Joe Howe (Ex Ben Butler & Mousepad) on saxophone.
This diverse lineup exemplifies d’Souza’s talent for blending musical traditions and creating something both original and deeply rooted in his influences.
