Audiopile Review: Following on quickly from his co-release with Alliyah Enyo, Selkie Reflections, Florian T M Zeisig issues a debut proper for his Angel R guise, landing back on the Enmossed imprint for this highly limited run. Wildly busy with various projects, including operating as one half of ambient oddballs NUG, contributing to this year’s chart-topper from Naemi, as well as being a major force behind Kelela’s breakthrough LP last year, Zeisig doubles back to the thickened ambient haze that won us over with You Look So Serious, his Enya-looping breakthrough from 2018. While You Look So Serious’ loops were fairly defined and identifiable, Zeisig gets down in the murk here, his set of submerged ambient loops are cross stitched together with the ebb and flow of static hums or spiralling smeared strings, everything bathed in a digital disintegration that feels like the ghostly imprint of his former teacher, Alva Noto. But alongside Noto, there are elements that can be traced back to Brian Leed’s impressionistic work under his Pendant guise or the blurred ambient that can heard throughout the 3XL/West Mineral zone. Needless to say, this one comes highly recommended. Edition of 240, ordered direct from the label, sold out at the source.

Florian TM Zeisig returns to enmossed with an LP of new material, 𝑴𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑶𝒇 𝑩𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒕 under a new moniker, Angel R. On this latest sonic offering, Angel R arranges the recordings with an undertone of hope, letting the aural dramaturgy unfold sans forced melancholia typical of the genres contemporary cliches. Zeisig’s signature attention to the circular gravity of the loop is again showcased, but Angel R takes the dynamic to another plane for 𝑴𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑶𝒇 𝑩𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑶𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒕 and allows for a swaying and staggered syncopation through choice album selections.
Filtered samples bounce off each other as they rain atop muted synth pads. Familiar sounds of nature become redefined through bit reduction, where grain illuminates new beauty in the re-examination of the sources. Angel R uses delay as a method of recall and deterioration, at once creating the new and delineating the end of the passages provided. At times reserved, at other moments bold and declarative, the album takes on the gamut of emotive signals to take the listeners through a narrative of complexity.
