Audiopile Review: The fifth volume in Andrés self-titled series of albums finally lands after a 4+ year wait since IV, which, once again, comes courtesy of Moodymann’s Mahogani Records imprint. While Andrés is best known for his seemingly endless string of 12”s that cover everything from disco edits, funk, hip-hop, house and every subgenre between, these full lengths have always been worth the wait (average wait time between full lengths is about 5 years!), allowing the master to string together a set of tracks that work like a continuous mix and a showcase for his flexible production. The largely sample-based tracks, which range from nimble electro-funk edits to gospel-infused house, are what have always made Andrés tracks pop, his keen ear seemingly able to flip anything into ear worm gold—see his ELO lift on the track “Cybermate” for evidence here! Another incredible display of his unparalleled knowledge and brilliance at stitching together an album that touches on 50+ years of dance music history. Limited copies and will not stick around.
Another timeless album from the Detroit legend that is Andres – and on Moodymann’s Mahogani music label too – combining house music, funk, hip-hop and latin flavours on this consistently good album that straddles many genres!
