Audiopile Review: The Dutch recluse Enno Velthuys has his 1984 cassette release A Glimpse Of Light, a masterpiece of homespun ambient music, reissued by Dead Mind Records, and now on its 4th repress for the label since first coming to vinyl in 2021. While his subsequent albums Landscapes In Thin Air and Ontmoeting, which were also recently reissued on Dead Mind, are rooted in the Berlin-School of ambient music, Glimpse has a raw and emotive feel, much more minimal and purely ambient than his later work. Tracks like “The Emperor”, “The Royal Woods” and “Uplands” seem to draw on the first Cluster & Eno collab, so simplistic yet utterly beguiling, each sustained note brimming with melancholic ache. Velthuys bridges the gap between first wave ambient music and what would come a mere decade later with albums like SAW II or early Biosphere. Essential. Edition of 200.

An absolute gem from the vaults of ’80s Ambient music and the Dutch underground, Dead Minds’ reissue of Enno Velthuys’ astounding 1984 album, “Glimpse of Light”, is a crucial missing link, one of the greatest unheard albums of its era, and one of the most beautiful records any of us is likely to encounter all year.
