Audiopile Review: Debut release from Brooklyn-based cine-funk outfit Pu Poo Platter, coming courtesy of Funk Night Records, probably best known for being the long-time US home for Estonian producer Misha Panfilov and his many projects. The quintet trod similar territory to the likes of early Badbadnotgood, Surprise Chef, 37th Chamber-era El Michel’s Affair etc, but bring enough freshness and hunger to the formula that they easily carve out their own cozy little corner in the subgenre. Centring the album in a decidedly laid-back style, Pu Poo Platter effortlessly deploy shimmering keys, balearic saxophone and wah-fuelled guitar, their eyes-closed groove propelled by a tightly wound rhythm section. If you’re into any of the above named outfits that precede them, we highly recommend diving in head first.
Pu poo platter is a flying saucer stranded in Brooklyn, NY back in 2019. It carried a group of (non-resident) aliens. They feed on music and listen to food. Despite struggling with life on Earth, they’ve grown to love the sunshine and donuts, and find fat white cats most intriguing. They try to make their own music, both to practice a more sustainable lifestyle and to spread love everywhere.
