The classic 1967 Chess album Muddy, Brass and the Blues, adds horns and prominent organ to Muddy Waters’ basic band format. Appearing after the release of the singles compilation Real Folk Blues, Chess made an effort to give some fresh momentum to Waters’ recordings. It was only his third original LP following his tribute album to Big Bill Broonzy and the Folk Singer album. Although it was a concept LP (like its two predecessors), Waters’ earlier work had been built around his returning to sounds and influences from his past. However, on Muddy, Brass and the Blues, the label tried to give him a new sound, similar to that of B.B. King. Stripped of his guitar once again, Waters proves what a great R&B singer he was. Otis Spann’s piano, as well as Sammy Lawhorn and Pee Wee Madison’s guitars come through the dubbed-on brass very well.
