‘Inversion / Presence’ is the finely tempered 1994 sibling to Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald’s acidic juggernaut ‘Enforcement’ (1993), also issued under the Cyrus mantle. It marks a mid-way point of the none-more-foundational Basic Channel series with one of its most hauntingly beautiful, entrancing consolidations of pulse and tone teased out as far as the ear can see in their 17-20min treks.
Frankly both sides are a near-religious experience that bring a lump-to-the-throat like nowt else. ‘Inversion’ is essentially a calm-after-the-storm to Cyrus’ thunderous ‘Enforcement’ and its ‘Recall’ version, simmering the bass to systolic throb and rendering the chords blue skyward with a pill-belly effect. The barely-there ‘Presence’ is its vaporous after-image; all muted dub-petrichord sensuousness and dread bass thrum, and a masterclass in deferred gratification.
