Recorded in 1968, Introducing Kenny Cox and The Contemporary Jazz Quintet was the debut album by this under-recognized Detroit band led by pianist Kenny Cox which featured trumpeter Charles Moore, tenor saxophonist Leon Henderson, bassist Ron Brooks, and drummer Danny Spencer. The band’s brand of post-bop was certainly influenced by the Miles Davis Quintet, but exhibited its own unique sensibilities on memorable originals like “Mystique,” “Trance Dance,” and David Durrah’s beautiful piece “Yo”. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
