From the electro-acoustic depth charge of opener ‘The Fog Detonator’ we’re dropped into the queer surroundings of the Jhonn Balance-remixed ‘Hobgoblins’ where hunchbacked brass cavorts with wheezing synths and sparkling bells somewhere in the ether. ‘The Black Drop’ hows another dimension to his oeuvre with rich, oaky strings reminding of some Wickerman incidental music and again ‘Sir Keith at Lambeth’ summons dense thickets of synth noise which believers of EVP may be able to draw something from.

‘The Vauxhall Labyrinth’ meanwhile uncannily evokes images of sheltering in an abandoned tube stop while a lonely sax plays from the other end of the platform and the dynamic noise movements of ‘While London Sleeps’ perhaps imagines an Orwellian future where drone bots hover outside your window, checking all is as it should. Mr Mulholland has crafted a sterling slice of aural magic with this album that should appeal to fans of avant-jazz, electro-acoustic, and sci-fi soundtracks.
