‘The Susceptible Now’ is the new record by drummer and 2024 Pulitzer Prize winner Tyshawn Sorey, who on this occasion offers covers of some of his favourite tracks. With his trio consisting of Aaron Diehl on piano and Harish Raghavan on bass, Sorey continues in the wake of his masterful ‘Continuing’, a record that placed fourth in the 2023 rankings voted by over 150 jazz critics in the Francis Davis Poll and was described by The Guardian as: ‘5 stars: seething with reinventions of ancient magic… One of the special sets of the year’. The new release continues to expand the ongoing partnership between Sorey and Diehl, now on their fourth album together. Although it is, at first glance, another set of covers of compositions that make up what Sorey calls the ‘Living Great American Songbook’, the line-up has approached this music very differently from ‘Continuing’: the arrangements are much more elaborate and complex. The music of ‘The Susceptible Now’ flows ingenuously through a wide range of moods, from punchy grooves to serene introspection. The tracklist features McCoy Tyner’s classic ‘Peresina’, Charles Mingus and Joni Mitchell’s ‘A Chair in the Sky’, Brad Mehldau’s ‘Bealtine’ and contemporary soul group Vividry’s ‘Your Good Lies’.
