Audiopile Review: Arriving just a few months after their recent collab on the Balmat imprint with fellow Miami resident Nick León, Coral Morphologic offer up their second full length, once again returning to the Terrestrial Funk imprint. Formed in 2007 and made up of marine biologist Colin Foord and musician J.D. McKay, the duo have combined their knowledge in a musical/scientific hybrid that aims to both educate the public about the unique coral systems that are under threat in and around Miami while soundtracking the endeavour. Anyone who already tuned in to their collab with Nick León will be familiar with the synth-heavy ambient underworld that’s explored across the album here. Made up of nine tracks that rarely break the two-minute mark, McKay swiftly changing course between pressurized eeriness, kaleidoscopic bursts of tone or wavering dream-like segues, each track dissolving into the next in one continuous exploration of the alien world lurking not far from the warm Miami shoreline. Definitely not far from the world of Balmat’s ambient outpost, the aquatic-themed end of Spencer Clark’s Star Searchers or Norm Chambers’ cult Jürgen Müller guise. And if you need some visuals to go along with the score here, be sure to check out the 24 hour underwater camera that they’ve set up in the midst of that coral reef (https://www.coralcitycamera.com/)!

Miami’s Coral Morphologic, recently spotted on their album with Nick León on Balmat, returns here for the second LP on Brother Dan’s excellent Terrestrial Funk label.

Across the vast expanse of the cosmos we approach a shimmering satellite globe. Entering its orbit in a hypnotic swirl our eyes peer closer and closer to the glowing sea below. We land near an intertidal zone wondering what enchants this world and its waters.

Coral Morphologic’s first album took us on a journey through space. Now with their sophomore LP we arrive at our destination, an aquatic world teaming with life.

Full Art sleeve and features a foldout poster with album art by Robert Beatty
