Souvlaki, the second studio album from English shoegaze pioneers Slowdive is an iconic shoegaze album that remains a defining work of the genre. Released in 1993, Souvlaki marked a significant evolution for the band, the album merges influences from David Bowie’s Berlin trilogy and Joy Division with deeply personal lyrics. The album was written after lead songwriter Neil Halstead and co-vocalist Rachel Goswell broke up and the songs reflect Halstead’s fragility and isolation during this period.
Souvlaki features standout tracks like “Alison” and “Souvlaki Space Station,” which showcase Slowdive’s signature sound of shimmering guitars and dreamy vocals. Despite initial mixed reviews, Souvlaki has since gained critical acclaim and is celebrated for its innovative production and enduring impact on the shoegaze and alternative rock scenes.
The term “shoegazer” was used to describe bands that emulated My Bloody Valentine’s blend of intense guitars and ethereal vocals. Slowdive toured with fellow shoegazing bands throughout the summer of 1991, but as Britpop and grunge emerged, the British music press grew increasingly critical of shoegaze.
2024 reissue pressed on translucent blue & red marbled vinyl, released via Music On Vinyl.
