Audiopile Review: Finnish-Italian improv jazz outfit Muumiot follow up their 2022 debut on Ultraääni with a new full length on Helsinki-based imprint Jazzagression. Culled from hours of improvised sessions, Pajazzo has a looser and, at times, more relaxed feel than its wilder predecessor, the sextet clearly able to inhabit a groove and ride it out with lengthier excursions. And the two longer cuts, which take up most of the album, is where Pajazzo shine. The 13 minute “Delirio Magico” struts along with a walking bass line that’s intercut with the dusty blues of electric guitar, intertwining saxophone and trumpet solos and shimmering keys, while the nearly side-long “Space Clown” digs into a rugged groove that sounds like an especially zonked take on Miles Davis’ dank fusion period circa Agharta. Definitely one for the adventurous jazz listener. But don’t sleep, this one was pressed in an edition of 300, and we ain’t gettin’ more.
Presenting the latest album “PAJAZZO” by the Finnish/Italian free jazz ensemble Muumiot, brought to you by Jazzaggression. Recorded during a break in their busy touring schedule in the winter of 2023, Muumiot had the opportunity to spend some studio time at Pelto Studio. The group comprises Virginia Genta (Italy) on Soprano Sax, Winds, and Keyboards, Sami Pekkola on Tenor and Alto Sax, as well as Percussion, Tuure Tammi on Trumpet, Topias Tiheäsalo on Electric Guitar, Tero Kamppainen on double bass, and David Vanzan on drums and percussion.
Throughout the session, which spanned several hours of improvised material, the group maintained a loose, moody atmosphere with thematic elements and occasional surprises. This is now a 5 track album limited to 300 copies, each album comes with picture insert in individually numbered fold-out sleeves.
