Audiopile Review: There’s no doubt that Galaxie 500 has a huge legacy. Obviously, Dean Wareham, Damon Krukowski, and Naomi Yang have all gone on to have notable careers. But it’s the group’s immeasurably significant contribution to the dreampop and slowcore genres that we’re talking about here. Like a lot of truly seminal groups, Galaxie 500 had a unique, inimitable sound that only has a tangential relationship to the genres it inspired. For an overview of just how singular and prescient Galaxie 500 was, you could not do better than ‘Uncollected Noise New York ’88-’90’. While this is a sprawling collection of 24 rarities, it feels like a solid, chronologically sequenced greatest-hits. Perhaps for a band as legitimately quirky as this, the outtakes tell the story better than the actual hits. And the fact that all the tracks were produced by the band’s legendary mentor Kramer is presumably what makes this collection so cohesive. Many of these tracks appeared on a CD compilation in 2004. But this expanded double vinyl edition is the definitive statement. It comes via Silver Current, the label behind Sonic Youth’s ‘Live in Brooklyn 2011’. So, you know this is going to be a beautifully packaged, great-sounding record.
