Audiopile Review: With the surging interest in all things dream-pop and shoegaze, its a great time for one of the great under appreciated bands of that timeless sound to re-emerge. NYC band Mahogany, whose only mainstay is multi-instrumentalist Andrew Prinz, issued a series of motorik dream-pop/shoegaze singles in the late ‘90s, eventually landing on Darla with a pair of full lengths in the early 00’s. Arriving a hair too late to be considered a part of the ‘90s golden era, but too early for the ’10s resurgence of the genre, Mahogany seemed to have always been destined to remain a cult band. But with this glorious new 2-track single that’s a taster of a forthcoming EP due later this year, Mahogany may finally get their due. Prinz has hardly messed with the formula that made them such a standout from the start, one that combines a rush of swirling 12-string guitars, disco-beat drum machines, taut basslines and devastatingly dreamy vocals, helmed this time around by Jaclyn Slimm, who joined Prinz back in 2013 for a one-off digital only single that hinted at a new era for the band, only to disappear for another decade. Ok, so it’s only two songs, but damn, what a pair! Ok Tik-Tok’ers, you’ve got your new dream-pop band to, uh, dance to, or whatever you do on that thing.

A Scaffold heralds the return of Mahogany, the shoegaze band who last released music in 2013. The single, produced alongside Jeremy Scott at the Civil Defense studio in Brooklyn, New York, rests on a sinewy bassline and their typically spatial synth atmospherics. A modern update on their absorbing sound, without compromising on their original, propulsive energy.
