Audiopile Review: The first of three releases planned this spring by Greg Foat, Live at Can Rudayla, Ibiza kicks off the series with this completely improvised set that captures the synth voyager in a blissed mode alongside guitarist/bass player Sasha Galperin and the drum machine dialled in by Ash Robinson. With a mid-tempo beat and subtle low-end groove in place, Foat glides effortlessly across with freewheeling solos on his trusty Moog among other analog gear, ranging in vibe from stargazing jazz-fusion excursions to windswept euphoria. As the album cover and live setting hint at, the tone throughout is one of deep balearic hypnosis, though this is more of an early evening mood setter than it is hedonistic dancefloor fodder. It all lands somewhere between Air’s earliest astral excursions, the gliding funk of Mr. Hands-era Herbie Hancock, and the ambient-house missives we’ve been enamoured with from Akasha System. Greg Foat once again refuses to sit easily in our jazz section.
