Audiopile Review: It took moving to France for Mattic to finally find his footing. Hooking up with some of France’s burgeoning producers, the North Carolina native has had a much bigger impact in Europe than he ever did on home soil. That being said, you can’t be blamed for not having heard of him yet, as he’s still largely ignored on this side of the Atlantic. The lack of attention over here hasn’t prevented European labels like HHV, the German hip-hop imprint and massive online record supplier, from issuing several of his prolific projects, including the previously mentioned Odd Holiday project as well as these other two collaborative efforts. The first of note is the 2022 album Down In The Rabbit Hole, which has Mattic backed by French producer Parental. Parental drapes the album in sun-soaked jazz samples that hearken back to the early productions of the golden era 90s acts like The Pharcyde or Tribe, though they’re tweaked with enough warped psych and soul samples to also draw easy comparison to Mattic’s Odd Holiday albums or his Clouds In A Headlock project.
Strictly limited edition of 300 copies in deluxe 2LP outfit incl. all instrumentals of “Down In The Rabbit Hole”, the collaborative effort by Mattic and Parental.
Mattic, a prolific rapper known as a member of The Others and his works with Wax Tailor, La Fine Equipe and ASM (A State of Mind), teams up with Paris-based producer Parental for another beautiful Hip-Hop album full of Jazz and Soul. The album includes features by Alcynoos, Haken Besik, YagoMeans and Green T of ASM and will be another jewel in the crates for fans of Jazz Liberatorz, Nujabes or Blu & Exile.
