Eleh “Harmonic Twins” (Important)

2020-05-07T20:41:43+00:00May 7th, 2020|

ELEH’s Harmonic Twins is slow moving monophony tuned to the overtone vocalizations generated by a particularly beautiful sound sculpture made by Harry Bertoia.

These two pieces are inspired by early music, choral masses, motets, the cathedral reverberations of sacred geometry and deep bass. Harmonic Twins was originally debuted by ELEH at Unsound, Krakow in 2017.

An optimal listening environment is recommended in order to experience the low frequencies of Harmonic Twins.

Loneos present a reissue of Massimo Guantini’s Diapositive, originally released in 1977. Fully produced at famous Roman Emmequattro Studios (home of many fascinating recordings by piano player Enrico Pieranunzi), the album is deeply rooted in the coolness of Italian libraries, showing an incredible musicianship. Skalpel ‎”Highlight” (Nopaper)

2020-05-07T20:41:38+00:00May 7th, 2020|

Throughout the years, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło have been blending local, traditional jazz inspirations with means of new electronica. This original and now signature approach initially sparked the interest of Ninja Tune, for whom Skalpel recorded two enthusiastically received albums: Skalpel (2004) and Konfusion (2005). Both albums brought them particular acclaim in the form of a Gilles Peterson Worldwide Award nomination and excellent reviews in NME, The Wire, and DJ Mag, along with a worldwide tour. Transit (2014), Skalpel’s third album marked a significant shift in their creative technique, a shift from samples to virtual instruments. From an emerging duo to major acclaim the pair’s new album Highlight, sees Skalpel take another turn, delivering their most comprehensive body of work to date. Finding a range of influences from the likes of Miles Davis, leftfield avant-garde, minimal, and the extensive legacy of both Warp and Ninja Tune as always, Skalpel allude to roots in Polish jazz and trip hop. However, within their creative process Skalpel’s focus remains centered with a contemporary sound coupled with their own autonomy and originality. The forthcoming album Highlight is a further extension of this method, existing as a demonstration of joyful, creative explosion and constituting their most rhythmically diverse and harmonically enhanced body of work to date.

Rafael Anton Irisarri ‎”The North Bend” (Room40)

2020-05-07T20:41:36+00:00May 7th, 2020|

Room40 present a reissue of Rafael Anton Irisarri’s The North Bend, originally released 2010. From Rafael: “The North Bend is about the Pacific Northwest region of the USA, where I lived at the time the album was made. Still, today I consider that region my spiritual home, even though I am now living on the East Coast. I had met Lawrence English in Poland back in 2009 and he kindly invited me to make a record for the label. I was a fan of his releases so this was really an obvious thing for me to say ‘yes’ to and a chance to create something special. I had released a few EPs and an LP under my name, all influenced by the so-called ‘modern classical’ ambient style pioneered by the late great Jóhann Jóhannsson and minimalist composers like Harold Budd and Arvo Pärt. The North Bend is the first work that dealt with ‘place’ and explored a locality, the first in a series of recordings all released with Room40. Since this album came out, I’ve left the Pacific Northwest for another location, New York state, which couldn’t be a starker contrast from the life in the PacNW. I had to start from scratch here in NY, as everything I owned until age 36 was stolen the night before I left to drive to NY. It was both a curse and a blessing. Not having the baggage & pitfalls of old ideas was wonderful, but also losing all the recorded & written works I had was harrowing at the time. Remastering The North Bend seemed like a natural thing for me. Not so much as revisionist history, but rather thinking how to make a record sound in a certain way without being able to revisit any of the mixes. In other words, the creative choices I made at the time (2010) are 100% preserved, there wasn’t any opportunity to revisit those, but rather make the record sound as good as I can framed through hindsight and a decade of separation from the period it was created.”

The Mauskovic Dance Band ‎”The Mauskovic Dance Band” (Soundway)

2020-05-07T20:41:34+00:00May 7th, 2020|

2020 repress. Soundway Records present the eponymous debut LP from in-demand Amsterdam five piece, The Mauskovic Dance Band — fusing no-wave dance punk, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and space disco in a “controlled explosion” (The Quietus). Entirely self-produced, the band has reiterated their favorite elements of the ’70s and ’80s legacy of the Afro-Latin psychedelic music of Colombia and Peru, interpreting it through the context of modern-day Amsterdam. The output is a lo-fi no wave groove all its own — rooted in a deep love of champeta, Palenque, psychedelic cumbia, chichi, classic Afrobeat, and picó soundsystem culture. Since the release of their Down In The Basement EP EP on Soundway Records in early 2018, the band have found themselves on a hectic European touring schedule — not to mention being involved in other side projects. Following stints with Turkish psychedelic folk rock group Altin Gün, and touring with the re-formed ’70s Zamrock outfit W.I.T.C.H., Nic Mauskovic also teamed up with Dutch neo-psychedelic artist Jacco Gardner to form the “cinematic Balearic disco” duo of Bruxas (released by Dutch institution Dekmantel) — and together, they mixed The Mauskovic Dance Band debut album in Lisbon. Lead single “Space Drum Machine” encapsulates the band’s prototypical brand of busy rhythmic patterns interwoven with insistent synth stabs and vibrant disco toms, layered with an elastic guitar riff drawing inspiration from Kenyan kikuyu and benga styles. High-pitched vocals describe being on a flight together and inciting each other to press a button of unknown consequence with “push it, push it” — and push it they do, at breakneck pace. And of course, the undeniable influence of Amsterdam’s hotbed of underground dance producers shines through as it does on all tracks – with the vintage psychedelic swirl of synthesizer, lo-fi drum machines, and tape recording. RIYL: Jacco Gardner, Bruxas, Nu Guinea, Voilaaa, Sofrito, Meridian Brothers, EUT, Altin Gün.

Patrick Shiroishi ‎”Descension” (Thin Wrist)

2020-05-07T20:41:32+00:00May 7th, 2020|

Patrick Shiroishi’s Descension is a beautifully elegiac and unflinchingly primal album. With richly layered solo saxophone, electronics, and voice, the album is a meditation on the legacy of a dark history and its echoing relevance in the present era. Descension is a spiritual journey that reveals Shiroishi’s deeply reflective and unique musical vision. Over the past decade Shiroishi has established himself as one of the key artists in Los Angeles’s free improvisation and avant-garde undergrounds. An incredibly inventive and versatile player, Shiroishi has collaborated with everyone from epic post-rock maximalists Godspeed You! Black Emperor to Radu Malfatti, the Austrian composer who pioneered the ultra-quiet reductionist school of improvisation. Shiroishi has also led or been at the center of innumerable ensembles which currently include Danketsu 10, Borasisi, Nakata, Kogarashi, Komeshi Trio. His previous groups include in the Womb, Oort Smog, oxox, Hoboglyphs, and Upsilon Acrux. On his debut album for Thin Wrist Recordings and his first solo vinyl release, Shiroishi makes a deep examination of his own ancestral history. “In the fall of 2016 I started researching heavily into the concentration camps of Japanese-American citizens during World War II,” says Shiroishi. “My grandparents on my father’s side met and married in the camps at Tule Lake, a place my grandmother never spoke about to me when she was alive. As I began to dive deeper, it naturally began to sink into my improvisations and work.” In the context of events that were unfurling in real time, Shiroishi’s work began to bridge the past with the present, using improvisation as the most immediate means of expression: “Everything on Descension was recorded in one take in the order that it appears,” recalls Shiroishi. “I didn’t prepare any melodies or form prior to the session; I anticipated playing layers and layers of noise. The record is a representation of how I had been processing the horrors of the present — the sadness of the loss of life not only in the states but through the genocides in Sudan, Myanmar, Iraq and Syria, anger that migrant children are being separated from their parents and being held in concentration camps again, the frustration that times really are frighteningly similar to when my grandparents were growing up.” Rather than create any sort of literal or agitprop statement, Shiroishi’s work tapped into a timeless spiritual tradition of music — closer to those of artistic heroes such as Coltrane or Ayler.

Devon Williams “A Tear In The Fabric” (Slumberland)

2020-05-07T20:41:21+00:00May 7th, 2020|

Over three albums under his own name, Devon Williams has honed a trademark blend of shining power pop, folk rock, and jangle pop that explores the shared spaces and nuances of each, anchored by his distinctive melodic gifts. After an uncharacteristic six-year break, he returns with “A Tear In The Fabric”: 12 lushly arranged, deeply felt songs chronicling a journey from confusion to clarity, driven by a lilting dreaminess, rock-solid songcraft, and unerring hooks.

The long six years between 2014’s “Gilding the Lily” and “A Tear In The Fabric” were defined by a series of changes: most notably, the birth of Williams’ daughter four years ago and the illness and eventual death of his father in 2019. Williams found himself engaged in an endless dialogue with his thoughts and, in turn, incessantly tweaking and prodding the material. Even mixing became a place to labor over details, turning into a two-year process.

The finished songs are a series of evocative snapshots for Williams: questions asked, answers given, compromises reached, as captured with startling lucidity as on “Domesticated”: “I’m under your skin, is this the price of forever? I don’t mind if you just do what you like / I find it hard to re-adjust this tug of war / Is it part of the role? / Well, if it is, I can play.”

Rarely have songs so personal sounded so luxurious. In a catalog full of pop gems, “A Tear In The Fabric” stands out for its completeness – individual worlds of sound and sentiment, timeless and transcending their origins. Its creation may have been laborious, but the final product feels as natural as breathing.

Adrian Younge Presents Loren Oden “My Heart, My Love” (Linear Labs)

2020-05-07T20:41:18+00:00May 7th, 2020|

“I wrote this song, Is There A Way, after reconnecting with an old love. Someone who I had a deep connection with, and a very loving relationship. It felt as though it was in another lifetime. That lifetime came Almost 10 years later when we reconnected and attempted to try our hand at love again. This song is my heart pouring out to her trying to find a way back to the love that we once had to build on and to grow on and to move forward in our newfound relationship. All the sweet and loving memories that made what we had so special. For me this is a very optimistic song about love, romance, and true happiness with a person that you feel soulmate status with.” – Loren Oden

Born into a musical family in Compton, Ca., Loren Oden grew up in the church.  This served as an incredible training ground for Oden, where he not only studied gospel, but secular greats like Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke. Being that those icons were bred in the church, Loren discovered sanctity in using his voice as a spiritual guide for love: a way to express his vulnerability, passion and struggles with handling reciprocal affection.   Oden’s transparency, or in other words, connection to people is what makes him one of the most captivating vocalists of the modern era.

Oden’s fledgling career gained momentum as a prominent background vocalist for  Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Kirk Franklin, Erykah Badu and Neyo, to name a few.  Within a couple years, his long-time colleague, composer Adrian Younge, enlisted him as the lead vocalist for the cult classic,  Black Dynamite, a blaxploitation parody theatrically released in 2009.  This was the beginning of Oden becoming the melodious bedrock of Younge’s psychedelic sound.

Music has allowed him to transcribe his emotional tussles; it’s one of the reasons why Oden sings lead on most of Younge’s melancholy catalog, including but not limited, to The Midnight Hour, Something About April, and Marvel’s Luke Cage (scored alongside Ali Shaheed Muhammad).  This is also the reason why Younge has decided to produce Loren’s debut LP, My Heart, My Love.  Their collaborations have served as a means for Oden to not only harmonize his story, but to travel the world doing it with extensive touring.    Loren has also written and recorded for many artists such as Snoop Dogg, Common, The Delfonics, Ghostface Killah, and Bilal.

Oden strives to vibrate frequencies relatable to lovers from all walks of life: a forgotten tenet derivative of classic black soul.  His on-stage performance is empowered with the ability to captivate audiences with mellifluous delivery and acceptance.  Be sure to see Oden as he tours with The Midnight Hour this fall.

Straight from the streets of Chicago, Illinois, The Devonns (pronounced “De vaughns”) are the brand new soul outfit and the latest addition of the Record Kicks’ family, whose self-titled debut album that drops April 06, is an assortment of influences taking us back to the heyday of soul.

Listening to music constantly at the time, he found inspiration to put a band together and create his own music. Pairing up with some of the best musicians Chicago has to offer, he founded The Devonns: the rhythm duty is entrusted to Khalyle Hagood (bass), Ari Lindo (guitar) and Khori Wilson (drums).

The result is an album filled with lavish arrangements and catchy melodies which take us on a nostalgic musical journey inspired by chic 70s soul, yet the band don’t hesitate to add their own unique and elegant contemporary stamp to the record.

Whoarei “Love Spectrum” (Timetable)

2020-05-07T20:41:00+00:00May 7th, 2020|

Love Spectrum is the debut album from Whoarei – released on Nosaj Thing’s Timetable Records imprint, these are 14 incandescent canvases produced in Whoarei’s bedroom between the years 2013 to 2017.

It includes the official release of “Loving You Ain’t Complicated,” the main sample from Kendrick Lamar’s “u” on To Pimp A Butterfly. Synthesized in full, the album is akin to Dam Funk collaborating to make fluorescent sub-tropical heaters with Kaytranada or Toro y Moi creating music from memory based on the legacy of Vito Ricci.

But of course, this is the uncut vision of Whoarei, a composer, musician and Grammy-Award winning producer from Sacramento, CA. You can hear the ancestral rhythms of his Salvadorian and Puerto Rican roots in the soulful fusion of the soundscapes. Salsa plays an elemental role in these compositions. Much of Whoarei’s childhood was spent in Puerto Rico, where he absorbed this classical blend of jazz and African rhythms. On Love Spectrum, you can hear this in the technicolor mélange; these are compositions that celebrate and clearly understand the artist’s heritage. Each recording is crammed with lapidary detail, the imperfections retained to add to the swelling humanity.

B0nds ‎”Phantom Versions” (Cold Busted)

2020-05-07T20:40:58+00:00May 7th, 2020|

After a steady run of acclaimed beat tape transmissions, the multi-faceted instrumental hip hop producer known as B0nds joins the Cold Busted fam for the 14-track album Phantom Versions. Inspired by the likes of J Dilla, Madlib, and Flying Lotus, the DC-area adjacent B0nds has been making beats for 15 years, developing a style that’s vibey and deep, characterized by down-low rhythms and layers of obscure samples and funky synth flavors. Recently B0nds co-produced “Park Closes at Dusk” with Fushou, and the track grabbed over 7 million plays on Spotify. B0nds is clearly on the rise.

Phantom Versions brings together all the essential elements in the B0nds toolkit. There’s loping after-hours rhythms and space-funk synthology in the dream-like “Elsewhere.” Jazz drums and pulsating R&B vibrations intermingle in “Lonely Afternoon.” “African Groove” assembles a team of loose percussion, funky guitar riffs, and snatches of lost-in-time vocals. And “On The Late Night Tip,” with its delicate construction and moonlit tones, epitomizes the feel of Phantom Versions. These are tracks that channel a mood felt in the latest and loneliest of hours, no matter the time of day. Let B0nds be your sonic guide through the shadowy night.
