Tangerine Dream “Sorcerer” (Waxwork)

2020-03-13T20:34:15+00:00February 20th, 2020|

Waxwork Records is proud to present SORCERER Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. Directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, Cruising) and starring Roy Scheider, Sorcerer is a 1977 intense, existential thriller that follows four outcasts from varied backgrounds that meet in a South American village. They are then assigned to transport cargos of aged, poorly kept dynamite that is so unstable that it is sweating its dangerous basic ingredient, nitroglycerin. The mounting expense to make the film required the involvement of two major studios, and production was troubled with its various filming locations in multiple countries, often times within dangerous rainforests and raging rivers. Sorcerer was a commercial failure and this has long been attributed to the George Lucas’s Star Wars which was released one month earlier, instantly becoming a pop-culture phenomenon and forever changing how Hollywood movies were made. Sorcerer has enjoyed a critical re-evaluation and is now widely considered to be a cinematic masterpiece.

The film’s music by German Krautrock and electronic group Tangerine Dream features the band’s first film score. Before the explosion of electronic and synthesizer based film scoring prevalent in the 1980’s in movies such as Blade Runner and The Terminator, and before the explosive modern day interest and revival of successful synth-scored TV series’ and movies such as Stranger Things and Drive, the music to Sorcerer by Tangerine Dream is a wildly influential blueprint and example of how movie scoring could be approached. Director William Friedkin instinctively sensed this during a chance encounter while witnessing a secret Tangerine Dream concert deep within the German Black Forest in an abandoned Church in the mid 1970’s.

Michael Abels “Us” (Waxwork)

2019-10-18T03:56:38+00:00October 18th, 2019|

Waxwork Records is proud to present the Us Original Motion Picture Soundtrack featuring a score by composer Michael Abels. Us, released in March 2019, is an original nightmare written, directed and produced by Academy Award®-winning visionary Jordan Peele (Get Out). Set in present day Santa Cruz on the iconic Northern California coastline, the film, starring Oscar® winner Lupita Nyong’o and Black Panther’s Winston Duke, pits an ordinary American family against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: doppelgängers of themselves.

A blockbuster that earned raves from critics and audiences alike, Us earned more than $250 million at the worldwide box office to become one the highest grossing R-rated horror films of all time, buoyed by an unexpected and innovative soundtrack and by a groundbreaking, terrifying original score by Abels.

Us marks the second collaboration between composer Abels and Peele, who first worked together on Peele’s 2017 Oscar-winning horror film, Get Out. For the Us score, Abels explored themes of duality and discord. “Sonically, what defines ‘scary’ is the unfamiliar,” Abels says. “It is the things that we can’t place, and that we don’t expect, that take us to that place of fear. We wanted to really strike terror into the audience.”

Central to the score was the opening track, an anthem for the doppelgängers, known in the film as The Tethered. Abels hit on the idea of using choral elements. “Jordan really loves the sounds of voices, and the human voice is an incredibly expressive instrument that anyone can relate to,” Abels says. “The anthem sounds a little like a march of people preparing for battle, like an uprising maybe, but the sounds are not in a recognizable language. In other parts of the film there are vocal effects, just these strange sounds. They’re designed to really freak people out.”

Abels featured a 30 person choir, a third of them children, in the “Anthem,” and implemented Eastern European instruments, violins, percussion and a virtual instrument called a Propanium drum. “It makes this trashy metal sound, but you can also play melodies on it,” Abels said. “The Propanium drum has a sound that’s both otherworldly but not electronic or like science fiction. It’s a sound you can’t quite put your finger on, which is why it works well in this film.”

Also included on the soundtrack is the 1995 hip-hop hit “I Got 5 On It” by Luniz and the stand-out track “I Like That” by Janelle Monáe. Abels also helped with a new arrangement of the Luniz hit, which is featured on the soundtrack as the ‘Tethered Mix from Us’.

Goblin “Profondo Rosso” (Waxwork)

2019-07-05T03:20:39+00:00July 5th, 2019|

Waxwork Records is proud to announce the expanded and definitive triple-LP release of PROFONDO ROSSO Original Motion Picture Score. The ground-breaking film music for the 1975 Italian-giallo-horror film Profondo Rosso marks the first collaboration of many between famed visionary-director Dario Argento and the band GOBLIN. Originally unable to acquire Pink Floyd to score the film, Argento discovered the synth-heavy progressive rock quartet that, at the time, featured the classic lineup of Morante, Simonetti, Pignatelli, and Martino. This collaboration proved fruitful and thus birthed the impending sonic landscape of numerous Argento written, directed, or produced classic horror films such as Suspiria, George A. Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead, Tenebrae, and Phenomena.

The Profondo Rosso score by Goblin is a mix of driving synth work, bass guitar, percussion, Jazz, piano, organ, and sound effects. This eclectic blend of instruments with an attack by well-rounded musicians created a film-scoring style completely new to the world of horror movies, and arguably, cinema in general.

The newly expanded triple-LP of Profondo Rosso features the complete original 1975 album by Goblin in addition to the complete alternate versions, instrumentals, original score music by Giorgio Gaslini, source music, and haunting sound effects.

Various Artists “Cruising Original Sountrack” (Waxwork)

2019-05-24T20:05:31+00:00May 24th, 2019|

Waxwork Records is thrilled to present CRUISING Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and Score. Available for the first time, the original 1980 soundtrack release has been expanded to include the complete film music. Spanning three LP’s, Waxwork worked closely with director William Friedkin, Sony, and Universal Pictures to locate and unearth the original masters that include the original Jack Nitzsche score sessions, the Germs recording sessions, and all music recorded for the film featuring The Cripples, Barre Phillips, Mutiny, and many more. This is the long awaited and definitive CRUISING soundtrack release requested by fans of the film, punk rock, and the counter culture for decades.

CRUISING is a 1980 erotic crime thriller directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, Sorcerer) and starring Al Pacino and Karen Allen. It is loosely based on the novel by the same name about a serial killer targeting gay men associated with the underground leather and S&M scene in New York City. The production and shooting of CRUISING was plagued with protests and petitioning to stop the filming by gay rights activists. The movie was received poorly upon release, however, CRUISING has gone to amass a large cult-following and is now considered to be a wildly underrated and thought provoking film that was years ahead of it’s time. CRUISING and director Friedkin unapologetically explored topics that were largely considered at the time to be taboo, noncommercial, and dangerous.

Director William Friedkin’s renegade approach at documentary style filmmaking took him to the darkest corners of the underground where his research and discovery of crime, lifestyle duality, and the burgeoning gay leather scene sparked the creation of a landmark film that is a topic of intense conversation and examination to this day.

Waxwork’s CRUISING Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and Score features the complete music recorded for the film pressed to 180 gram Blue, Black, and White colored vinyl, a 12”x12” booklet featuring an exclusive essay by director William Friedkin on the intense making of the film and creation of it’s music, album design and layout by Aesthetic Apparatus, triple gatefold jackets with satin coating and spot UV gloss, and all music sourced and re-mastered from the original master tapes.

Richard Einhorn “The Prowler” (Waxwork)

2019-02-22T03:10:48+00:00February 22nd, 2019|

Waxwork Records is thrilled to kick off 2019 with the deluxe vinyl release of THE PROWLER Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Richard Einhorn. Released in 1981, THE PROWLER is one of the earliest films to become part of the American-Slasher genre. It also features special effects by Tom Savini (Friday the 13th, Creepshow, Day Of The Dead) and was directed by Joseph Zito (Friday The 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter). The film’s music by Richard Einhorn (Shock Waves, Don’t Go In The House) introduces the composer’s departure from the primitive, monophonic synth scoring of his earlier work, and implements a blend of orchestral cues and mature electronic soundscapes. Waxwork Records worked with the composer to research and locate the master tapes that were thought to have been destroyed for decades. The tapes were restored, transferred, and the music was mixed, constructed into a cohesive soundtrack listening experience, and mastered specifically for vinyl. This special release is a must for fans of the horror genre.

THE PROWLER was released just one year after the critical success of FRIDAY THE 13TH, and has become one of the classic, underrated American-Slasher horror gems. The film is downright scary and features some of the most shocking death scenes of the entire horror movie genre due in part to the expertise of special effects mastermind, Tom Savini. The story tells of a group of college students holding a graduation dance 35 years after a double homicide occurred in their small town. They are targeted by a masked assailant dressed in World War II G.I. fatigues who begins a murderous spree.

This new, definitive double LP film score release of THE PROWLER features all of the film’s music composed by Richard Einhorn pressed to 180 gram Army Green Swirl with Rose Petal Red Splatter, new artwork by Ghoulish Gary Pullin, exclusive liner notes by director Joseph Zito, and a printed insert featuring Rosemary’s break-up letter.

Waxwork Records is thrilled to announce the deluxe vinyl release of TEENAGEMUTANT NINJA TURTLES Original Motion Picture Score by John DuPrez. With a highly anticipated live-action motion picture released in 1990, TEENAGE MUTANTNINJA TURTLES proved to be the biggest pop-culture property in the world for the time. Lifted from the pages of the popular comic series, a wildly successful Saturday morning cartoon, and a massive hit-line of toy action figures, the motion picture adaptation of the beloved crime fighting turtles brought the franchise to the next level.

The gritty and dark NYC martial-arts-superhero-comedy featured the four cherished ninja turtles with a slew of other idolized characters such as Master Splinter, Shredder, Casey Jones, April O’Neil, and The Foot. The film marks the highest grossing independent film at the time and spawned two sequels, The Secret Of The Ooze in 1991 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III in 1993.

In collaboration with composer John DuPrez, TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, and Nickelodeon, Waxwork Records is proud to present the official and complete 1990 score to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the movie. Paul McCullough “Night Of The Living Dead” (Waxwork)

2019-01-10T22:07:47+00:00January 10th, 2019|

Waxwork Records is honored to present the 50th Anniversary Edition release of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to George A. Romero’s horror classic, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Written, filmed, and released in 1968 by a rag tag group of Pittsburgh based misfits, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is an American independent horror film that follows the story of seven people trapped in a rural farmhouse that is besieged by a large and growing group of living dead ghouls. The film is regarded as a cult classic by critics, film scholars, and fans and has garnered critical acclaim. The film has been selected by the Library Of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry and is deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant”.

Filmed and released on a shoestring budget, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD became a smashing success earning over 250 times its budget. The film is a first of its kind and ushered in a new way of writing, directing, and filming horror films. The overused script of romantic, fantastical tales of otherworldly monsters and creatures was completely flipped and tossed aside by visionary George A. Romero. As the film’s writer and director, Romero created a new, obvious threat, and one that is universally recognizable – Our very own neighbors. Due to an unseen force beyond man’s control, the recently deceased arise from the dead in seek of living human victims. These ghouls kill and feast upon the flesh of their victims, and the only way of stopping them is by destroying their brains.

From 2015 to 2018, Waxwork Records worked closely with the remaining members of the independent production company that made NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, Image Ten, in an effort to produce a definitive soundtrack album featuring all music from the film. Much of the film’s music was thought to be lost or destroyed, but was located in its entirety and faithfully restored and re-mastered for vinyl.

This special 50th Anniversary Original Motion Picture Soundtrack release of NIGHTOF THE LIVING DEAD features the complete soundtrack for the very first time in any format, 180 gram double LP “Ghoul Green” colored vinyl, all new artwork by Robert Sammelin, a booklet featuring never before seen production photos, liner notes by Daniel Kraus (co-author of THE SHAPE OF WATER with Guillermo Del Toro), liner notes by Night Of The Living Dead’s dialogue recorder and sound engineer, Gary Streiner, and deluxe packaging.
