High Command “Beyond The Walls Of Desolation” (Southern Lord)

2019-11-08T04:40:51+00:00November 8th, 2019|

Worcester, Massachusetts-based crossover outfit HIGH COMMAND set out on a warpath to create the heaviest work they have produced yet on their debut full-length and Southern Lord debut, Beyond The Wall Of Desolation.

HIGH COMMAND is, in their own words, “five friends coming together to create the sonic equivalent of a barbarian horde.” The band’s lyrical world, created by vocalist Kevin Fitzgerald, is steeped in lore and savagery, heavily inspired by fantasy-based warfare, and in the band’s words, “boundless quests frozen in the aeons of time and space hacked out of ice and transcribed in lightning. Beyond the thin vail of sanity lies the forgotten age of mysticism and heroes.”

Their studio choice for such proceedings was the legendary Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, constantly challenging the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of recorded media. From hearing previous projects recorded there (The Body, Big Brave and Churchburn to name a few) it was apparent to the band that this was a studio that had a focus on the unique and the organic. Seth Manchester, the head engineer, worked tirelessly for the week HIGH COMMAND was there, sculpting a record with a healthy respect to the Old Gods of metal they admire while at the same time, sonically speaking, also carving a realm of its own.

The eight bludgeoning tracks on Beyond The Wall Of Desolation cleave the tender cranium of the listener asunder across their forty-three-minute running time. Bringing forth the undeniable heft in their self-proclaimed New Wave Of Worcester Heavy Metal, the heaviest of armament is advised against the flail.

Sunn O))) “Pyroclasts” (Southern Lord)

2019-11-08T04:40:49+00:00November 8th, 2019|

Limited Red Vinyl!

The Pyroclasts album is the result of a daily practice which was regularly performed each morning, or evening during the two week Life Metal sessions at Electrical Audio during July 2018, when all of the days musical participants would gather and work through a 12 minute improvised modal drone at the start and or end of the day’s work. The piece performed was timed with a stopwatch and tracked to two inch tape, it was an exercise and a chance to dig into a deep opening or closing of the days session in a deep musical way with all of the participants. To connect/reconnect, liberate the creative mind a bit and greet each other and the space through the practice of sound immersion. The players across the four pieces of Pyroclasts are Tim Midyett, T.O.S., Hildur Guðnadóttir, and as always Stephen O’Malley & Greg Anderson.

The music on Pyroclasts is inextricably woven to Life Metal. It exists on the very same tape reels, was explicitly recorded by Steve Albini. The brightness and vividity of that glorious session glares through these four tracks, the precision and radiance, prismatic lustrousness of the saturation, the elemental sculptural shapes, the abstract renderings. It is a sister, or perhaps a shadow album. Or perhaps the now apparent miasma or aether. But it also exists in a form of a pause, a time space which exist in between and around the compositional structures of Sunn O)))’s titanic works.

For the listener or recipient/participant there are deep rewards within the patience of pulling down the walls and letting the music feel, and feel the music. To be immersed will reveal great detail and colour, clarify image, encourage a depth of focus and stillness which may lead to a quite profound experience. Sitting inside the space of time. A deep form of elementalism, even atomism, and connection with presence moment, time and reality. Sunn O))) would invite their audience to consider these points of perception when experiencing and listening to Pyroclasts. Sunn O))) would also invite and encourage the audience to use Pyroclasts as a lens to review and reexperience the complexity of the Life Metal album, and even to interrupt its sequence with Pyroclasts. This elaboration can bring the astute listener both abyssal, hallowed rewards.

Pyroclasts was recorded and mixed by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio on two inch tape July 2018, and mastered by Matt Colton through all analogue AAA process at Metropolis July 2019. Four of Samantha Keely Smith’s incredible consciousness memory landscape paintings grace the album sleeve – album cover below

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit “Here We Rest” (Southeastern)

2019-10-18T03:53:18+00:00October 18th, 2019|

Vinyl reissue of the 2011 album from Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.

Originally released in 2011. Remixed and remastered in 2019. The third album from ex-Drive by Trucker Jason Isbell and his second with the 400 unit, the writing and recording of Here We Rest followed a period of recuperation in his home state of Alabama. indeed, the album’s title is the old state motto, before they changed it a century ago to something fancy and latin. Much of the material on the record reflects southern life, some of it peculiar to the region (Alabama Pines), but many of the songs touch universal themes – the economy, marital strife, and war, though seen through a southern perspective. The best songs here, the fore-mentioned Alabama Pines, the loping Codeine and the gentle Daisy Mae all demonstrate a warmth, intimacy and authenticity that can’t help but draw the listener in.

Rein Sanction was a group of reclusive sonic explorers from the 90s. They released two massively powerful and beautiful albums on Sub Pop only then to basically implode into tragic obscurity. Dark, intense, wall of sound guitars akin to Hendrix meets Neil Young with heart-wrenching, emotive vocal emanations. Their first ever LP was originally only pressed in extremely small quantities. This is a remaster, reissue of this first self titled offering from this gorgeous beast.

Third vinyl release from these Danes on Southern Lord after ‘Blodets Band’ (2015) and ‘Sort Sind’ (2016). Follows in the line of ‘Sort Sind’ with some Black Flag like medium tempo as well as the ever raging D-beat but a few new ingredients have been added to the mix: a tiny dash of goth gloom, a pinch of fucked up electronics and a rather healthy dose of furious saxophones. That’s right, saxophones!!! Kinda like Fear sang ‘Copenhagen’s all right if you like saxophones!’. That said, it’s all Halshug and all very very angry! The same but different.

Caspar Brötzmann Massaker “Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore” (Southern Lord)

2019-07-18T23:15:10+00:00July 18th, 2019|

Southern Lord announces the next CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER reissues in the ongoing series, continuing with Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore and Koksofen, now confirmed for release in July. Tracks from each of the two new reissues are now posted for streaming. The outfit will also be actively performing live this summer, including supporting Sunn O))) on tour in Europe.

CASPAR BRÖTZMANN is one of the most unique and innovative guitarists of the last forty years. With his Berlin-based trio MASSAKER, he evolved a whole new autonomous approach to writing rock songs, starting from sounds that were widely considered ornamental if not detrimental “sonic waste,” such as shrieking feedback and droning overtones. This plethora of sounds were arranged into tracks to sound like breaking concrete, grinding metal, or bursting glass, at once monumental and threatening, impenetrable, and hermetic, yet also archaically tender and loving.

Even today, as the art of noise has reached a level of sophistication that no one could have imagined thirty years ago, CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER‘s music is resoundingly singular. Ultra-heavy riffs and beats, ominous tribal chants, and a raw physical force is conjured up by these three sinister and proud minds of their era. Their unhinged, unified stream of energy is captured on these remastered reissues and the results are thrilling.

Pelican “Nighttime Stories” (Southern Lord)

2019-06-21T19:24:03+00:00June 21st, 2019|

Pelican, the instrumental quartet whose singular vision of heavy music eschews classification, releases its first full-length in six years, Nighttime Stories, via Southern Lord Recordings.
The eight-song Nighttime Stories marks Pelican’s first release written front to back with guitarist Dallas Thomas, who took over guitar duties upon founding member Laurent Schroeder-Lebec’s departure in 2012. In the process of writing the album, the quartet endured a slew of realizations, tragedies, and glimmers of optimism that guided the creative process to the most potent work of its 19-year career. Though the new material veers towards the darker tone characteristic of Pelican’s early songwriting, it’s hard to imagine a previous incarnation of the band writing songs as meticulously crafted and detail-oriented as those within Nighttime Stories, where the compositions recall everything from the triumphant call-to-arms of classic Dischord, to the vicious troglodyte battery of the Melvins, to the dynamic interwoven melodies of bottom-heavy indie cult heroes Chavez. Nowhere is this evinced as clearly as on initial album single “Midnight And Mescaline”, the album’s lead single.
Nighttime Stories was an album title initially proposed for Tusk, the hallucinatory art-grind band that included Pelican members Trevor Shelley de Brauw, Larry Herweg, and Schroeder-Lebec, in addition to vocalist Jody Minnoch. The writing of Nighttime Stories was instigated shortly after Minnoch’s unexpected death in 2014, and some of the dissonant viscera and dark psychedelic structures that were characteristic of Tusk’s sound began to unconsciously inform the album’s direction. In homage to its departed colleague, Pelican applied the previously discarded title and pulled many of the song titles from notes Minnoch had sent to inspire the direction of the unrealized album. As the writing of Nighttime Stories progressed, Thomas also experienced a heavy loss with the passing of his father, to whom the album pays tribute on opening track “W.S.T.” (on which Dallas performed his guitar parts on his father’s Yamaha acoustic).
Pelican has always excelled at vacillating between the savage sounds of various niches of metal underground and the more delicate and nuanced sounds of Midwest’s cerebral indie community, proving that they can make either end of the spectrum more vibrant and compelling through the art of contrast. With Nighttime Stories, the pendulum has swung back to the angst and ire of their younger years while delivering it with the nuance and wisdom that’s come with nearly two decades of writing and performing.

Since their inception in 2012, BIG|BRAVE have explored terrains of experimental rock with a clear focus on the key principles; space, volume, and raw emotion. The same principles are the starting point for the new album and in the process of revisiting their early intentions, BIG | BRAVE have boldly evolved, emerging with a thrilling new body of work that is all at once refreshingly new, explosively heavy, dynamically loud, beautifully minimal, carefully repetitive, and totally and utterly cathartic.

Toadliquor “Hortator’s Lament” (Southern Lord)

2019-01-11T20:24:48+00:00January 10th, 2019|

Southern Lord Recordings presents Cease & Decease, a double-LP discography by oppressive sludge juggernaut, TOADLIQUOR, released as part of Southern Lord’s 20th Anniversary series. The unreleased newly-recorded song included on the record, “(Closing Sections Of) Inter-Stellar Space,” is now streaming at Cvlt Nation.

The mysterious TOADLIQUOR continues to hold its position as one of the most crushing sludge outfits from the ’90s, while maintaining a shroud of mystery and diehard cult following two decades later. Not only does the collection encapsulate the entire 1993-released Feel My Hate – The Power Is The Weight – R.I.P. Cain LP as well as some unearthed extremely scarce and previously-unreleased recordings, it also includes a newly recorded song that was especially prepared, written and documented for this release. Cease & Decease also marks the first time the band’s entire four-part “Inter-Stellar Space” opus is pressed together; the first three sections were found on different releases, and the closing section had never been recorded before now.

Sunn O))) have reissued their two White albums in high fidelity vinyl format. Originally released in 2003 and 2004 respectively, White 1 and White 2 were actually conceived as acoustic albums. But as Sunn O))) co-founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson note, the outcome of the recording sessions at Oregon’s Fontanelle’s Magnetic Park studios made for two psychedelic, electronic drone experiments.

The reissues will be pressed on 180 gram vinyl and include an A1 poster of portraits by Kerry O’Sullivan and Glynnis McDaris. They’re limited to 1000 copies each and can be bought via Southern Lord’s website or Bandcamp. Later on in July they’ll hit the shops in a variety of colours.

Axis of Despair “Contempt for Man” (Southern Lord)

2018-08-03T15:16:55+00:00August 3rd, 2018|

Axis of Despair features former and present members of such bands as Nasum, Coldworker, Infanticide, Volturyon, Livet som insats, Nervgift and Overtorture. To be exact: The band was formed by former Coldworker members Anders Jakobson (drums), Oskar Pålsson (bass) and Joel Fornbrant (vocals) in the end of 2013. About half a year later the line up was completed by Livet som insats member Kristofer Jankarls playing the guitar. The band continued to work on songs until the late spring of 2015 when the first 12 tracks were recorded to be released on two, sort of, conjoined 7″ EP’s. “Contempt For Man” is the swedish grind super-groups first full-length album. It is a pulverizing bull dozer of intense grind-core.

Baptists “Beacon of Faith” (Southern Lord)

2018-06-22T18:04:36+00:00June 22nd, 2018|

Beacon Of Faith broadly follows the same trajectory as the album’s predecessors, Bushcraft (2013) and Bloodmines (2014) – combining raw adrenaline-fuelled emotion, venomous vocal delivery, gigantic guitar sound, and a visceral rhythmic propulsion – a sonic manifestation of desolate rage, bolstered by a palpable sense of urgency. Beacon Of Faith is densely-packed yet Baptists’ sound is far from claustrophobic, there is melody amongst the dissonance, as the band more deeply explore the noise rock vistas that have always underpinned their sound. Lyrics are drawn from their direct experience of a broken society and general discontentment with everyday life. A multitude of issues are in the firing line, from the Canadian court system, issues surrounding substance abuse, mental health, and how the more fortunate “tend to dismiss people who have been dealt a less-fortunate hand” – as guitarist Danny also reflects.

Scream “NMC17” (Southern Lord)

2018-05-11T01:28:11+00:00May 11th, 2018|

A seminal album of the 1980s DC Punk sound, the album was the first to feature drummer Dave Grohl, who replaced Stax for the album, and stayed with the band until they disbanded in 1990. This was the first ever album the now world famous musician ever played on. Since disbanding, several incarnations of Scream have reunited / resurfaced for tours and recordings since. Members of the band went on to form countless other influential acts, including Nirvana, The Foo Fighters, Wool, Queens of the Stone Age, Goatsnake, The Suspects, and others. Southern Lord is proud to be chosen to reissue Scream’s everlasting No More Censorship album. The band found the original multi-track tapes and Southern Lord had them baked / prepped for a remix at Grohl’s 606 Studio. The new mix sounds vital and intense; the entire packaging, layout, and design are completely different from the original, including unreleased photos of the band during that era.

Awaken arrives ten years since the release of their first album, and AGRIMONIA has evolved notably over that period. Their sound has always been dense, immersive, ambitious even, and on Awaken, the band has evolved their prog-infused form of expansive metal into something energetic, dynamic, and powerful. On Awaken, the band digs deep into their subconscious, trying to get an elevated state of mind, to connect the mind with sound and to find the combination of notes and melodies that evolves into a feeling or mood. AGRIMONIA channels the bittersweet aspects of life, and breathe air into thoughts that cannot easily be put into words.

The first 10 years of Magma were celebrated on three memorable evenings in June 1980 at the Olympia theatre in Paris. This retrospective, reuniting most of the musicians who had performed in the group, was issued as two albums, Retrospektïẁ 1 / 2 (double) and Retrospektïẁ 3 (single). Issued first, Retrospektïẁ 3 comprises 3 titles Retrovision, a long piece in the style of the album Attahk, in which the vocalists Stella Vander, Guy Khalifa and Maria Popkiewicz turn in a blazing performance over a driving rhythm section; a supercharged version of Hhai, in which the trio Lockwood / Paganotti / Widemann works miracles; and finally La Dawotsin, where, in a more muted register, the voice of Christian Vander triumphs through its mastery and profound sensibility.
