Linkwood & Foat “Linkwood & Foat” (Athens Of The North)

2020-03-13T20:33:46+00:00March 5th, 2020|

Athens of the north is not just here to release great music but to support our artist development and experimentation, to this end we always try to bring good people together to work on new music. This LP fuses two massive talents, for the first time to AOTN we introduce House and Techno legend Linkwood, joining him is one of the |UKs most respected Jazz Artists Greg Foat, who will need no introduction to AOTN fans

‘Linkwood & Foat’ is the first LP to be recorded in the new ‘Athens of the North Studio’, which was designed and built specifically for our artists so that they can create without the time pressures or expenses of studio hire elsewhere. With no fixed plans, no rules or expectations, the pair relaxed in the new studio and started making music. The result is very special indeed

Linkwood had just returned from walking in the wilds of an Ibiza summer and Greg had similarly been immersed on the sun drenched south coast of the Isle of wight. This freedom and sense of space saturates the grooves of the LP juxtapositioned against a deeper late night basement club feel they both love so much, the pull between nightlife and the freedom of nature. It’s extroversion and introversion, the freedom and escapism of the two seemingly opposing environments permeates this recording.

LaRombe “From Philly” (Athens Of The North)

2020-03-13T20:33:46+00:00March 5th, 2020|

LaRombé is one of the most talented songwriters I have come across in my years of working for Jazzman and Athens of the North. Having gone through much of his tape archive it obvious what a powerhouse of song writing and composition this man is. LaRombé music is of the strongest calibre all the way, from his first release in 1979 to present day. All of his Soul, Disco & R&B stands the test of time. It’s easy to have one record that with luck ends up great but another thing to write record after record with great hooks you can’t leave alone. Athens of the North is very proud to present ‘From Philly’, Vinyl comes with sleeve notes featuring interview and photos.

Greg Foat “The Dreaming Jewels” (Athens Of The North)

2020-03-02T07:10:48+00:00January 9th, 2020|

Recording at Malcom Catto’s analogue studio has been an ambition of Greg’s for a long time, not only for the studio itself but for Malcolm’s skill using this vintage equipment, very few people can achieve such an incredibly big sound.

Earlier this year we grabbed the chance to get the full Greg Foat group joined by Binker Golding (Binker and Moses) on Tenor Saxophone, Malcolm Catto on drums and Hugh Harris (The Kooks) on Guitar on the session.

Moving to a more rhythmic space, you could call it Jazz funk or Fusion, but labels suck so just listen and appreciate the pure sense of space Malcom achieves with this recording. Instruments float in space, aided by the Vintage EMI desk and a host of valve equipment which has taken Malcolm a lifetime to collect. In amongst the more rhythmic pieces we also have some classic Foat style compositions; ‘Lake Kussharo’ and ‘The Dreaming Jewels’ as emotive and personal as ever, a feeling that can only be expressed and articulated in music. These past few years will no doubt be looked back on with great favour in musical history, with prolific and high quality output in all his various projects this LP is his crowning achievement of 2019. A strong year indeed!

Various Artists “Disco with a Feeling” (Athens Of The North)

2019-11-22T03:11:33+00:00November 22nd, 2019|

Here at Athens of the North you know we love Disco, what you might not know is that my friend David Haffner (not only the deepest of disco heads but a great D.J as well) helped us license many of the rare Disco 45s on the label. It is about time David gets the shine he deserves so we asked him to compile some of the songs he helped licence for the label alongside new songs which we have here’Disco With A Feeling’.

So what is ‘Disco With A Feeling’? It’s hard to quantify a sound, but our definition would include 70s Soul or Modern Soul 45s that fit into the disco sound, soulful and magical. The whole LP is straight up dance-floor fire, no matter who you are or where you’re from – a soul boy, disco lady, or a house head you are going to feel the heat of these club smashers.

Dennis Young “Primitive Substance” (Athens Of The North)

2019-06-24T19:38:54+00:00June 24th, 2019|

After Liquid Liquid disbanded in 1985 I continued to record electronic music at my home studio inEdison,New Jerseybut I decided to mix the songs for “Concepts” at another studio so I could have another set of ears to help with the mixes. I was lucky when I looked in the local music ads that I to find Gabriel Farm Studios inPrinceton,New Jerseyowned and operated by Andy Gomory. Andy was a true talent, a keyboardist and arranger, we hit it off immediately. After he recorded my mixes we would record songs together. Andy played drum machines and keyboards while I played percussion, keyboards, & guitar and we both sang. When Andy and I parted ways in the late 1980’s I decided to add both drums and percussion as well as overdubs from guest musicians many of which are included on this album. The albums timeframe ends in the year 2004. The later recordings have a jazz feel to it yet still had dance music elements mixed in. The title track “Primitive Substance” really sets the tone as you hear the great playing of Michael Gribbrook on Frugel horn/Trumpet and Gerry Carboy on bass. Also, my favorite song on the recording “Forgiveness” has David Axelrod (not the famous one) playing beautiful melodic bass guitar thru out.

Special thanks to Euan Fryer of “Athens of the North” for releasing this album. As I listened to the songs I decided to use for this recording it brought back memories of the hours spent adding the extra sounds and instruments to the point where I wanted to listen to them again and again to see what I missed hearing. Keep a close ear this might happen to you after hearing “Primitive Substance”.

Greg Foat “The Mage” (Athens Of The North)

2019-06-07T02:59:52+00:00June 7th, 2019|

Greg Foat’s 9th album ‘The Mage’ joins the dots between the past and future of British jazz. Enlisting the talents of jazz/library/soundtrack legends Duncan Lamont, Art Themen, Ray Russell and Clark Tracey to collaborate with their modern contemporaries Greg Foat, Moses Boyd and Heliocentric’s drummer Malcolm Catto to create something undeniably British but outward looking and global.

A long time personal ambition for Greg was to work with Trinidadian songstress Kathy Garcia, on ‘The Mage’, this wish is granted as she joins him to re-imagine the deep Xian masterpiece ‘Of my Hands’, 45 years after recording it as a young girl.

Greg’s compositions and arrangements showcase the old and new, downtempo folkscapes, free jazz with notes of hip-hop and soul from the young team flavouring the mix. Featuring Simon Ljungman and Friends as a male choir, Greg’s EMS Synthi AKS experiments (made famous by Dr Who) the album is a testament to the versatility and pure musicality of all those involved and Greg Foat’s ability to bring artists together to record beautiful, timeless music.

Judy Pollak “In Togetherness” (Athens of the North)

2019-04-05T03:01:24+00:00April 5th, 2019|

Judy Pollak’s late 70s LP is extremely rare and charming piece of music. Not just a Soul and Funk LP, sprinklings of folkiness in Judy’s vocal make this a fairly unique and fantastic listen, no wonder it can hit $1000 when it comes up for sale. Recorded in 1977 at PAC 3 Studio, Dearborn, Michigan, where bands such as Al Hudson, Floaters, C.J. & Co and many more recorded. Judy used to hang out on the music scene and was introduced to the band via a mutual friend and Sax player Charlie Gabriel. 33 1/3 who were from Detroit got together with Judy who was living Living between Southfield, Michigan and North Carolina at the time and this LP is the result.

Born in Rio in 1940, Helio won a guitar from his father at age 12. After working in sugar mills or as a sales clerk in record stores, he started performing at Rio nightclubs (like Plaza) and São Paulo.

In 1975 he signed to RCA Victor on which he released his first LP, “Matheus Segundo Matheus”. With arrangements by Oberdan “Black River” Magalhães, Zé Rodrix and Chiquinho de Moraes with participation of Azymuth as a support band with a total of 128 musicians involved int he recording.

Junior Mendez “Copacabana Sadia” (Athens of the North)

2018-01-31T00:16:48+00:00January 31st, 2018|

Luiz Mendes Jr or “Junior Mendes” was a ubiquitous figure in the Brazilian Soul / Funk scene of the 70s and early 80s, contributing to compositions for bands such as Banda Black Rio , Tim Maia, Sandra de Sá and many more. This, his only solo album has remained off the map (unless your a collector of rare Brazilian vinyl). Despite his huge contribution to Brazilian music the LP has remained unreleased until now, 35 years after its recording.
